Membereasy, buy an NC10
jez
MemberWhat colour is it? Are you wishing you had waited for a pink one ;)?!
jez
MemberI haven’t heard much about that one, thanks for the links. Having a brief look at the specification it does look very much like NC10 territory.
jez
MemberI find people always think it’s pretty neat, and then I tell them the price. Then they want one too! I often end by saying… “I know this great little site…” 😉
jez
Memberyeah e107 doesn’t seem to handle oversized avartar images that well. The admin area does pick them out but it just gives the option to delete them. I might have a look at forcing them to a certain size.
Sorry to go OT. As you were!
jez
Memberyeah I know what you mean, I noticed that my dongle comes with a phone number. I’ve never tried calling it!
I don’t know the answer but would be interested if someone does. I’m guessing no, but that’s just a guess!

MemberHope you are in better health Odublar! Good luck with the savings and staying debt free. I’ve always been a saver too, except whilst at University but once you graduate, and you get that first job, clearing those debts can be done pretty quickly with some determination.
Best deals? I’m sure some US buyers will help out, I recall some rebate deal through live.com? The where to buy page here has some standard deals but prob won’t help you squeeze the last dollars out of the purchase I’m afraid!
Good luck 🙂

MemberHi stv – glad you’ve been enjoying the forums to date. And agreed, there are some great contributers on here so I’d also like to thanks everyone for making the forum work!
Good to have another Linux fan around too, I think most of us on here like to tinker around a bit! Although I must admit I’m a Windows kind of guy 😉
jez
MemberSomeone on the forum has indeed installed it. Try searching around, if the site search doesnt work that great then Google might help if you use the “site:” modifier

MemberThis blog post talks about my RAM upgrade. I’ve tried to round up the key topics on the NC10 resources page.
There are also lots of youtube videos, I just picked the first one so cannot vouch for its quality…

MemberI think prices will continue down too as time passes. But this is the age old problem when buying tech, all the time you wait you don’t have one!
The other manufacturers are readying their new models and they will be shipping out in the first half of the year, this will surely also push the NC10 down in price.
But as said above, tbh I don’t think there is much innovation and the NC10 hit a sweet spot. I guess ulitmately it depends on how much you value your money versus how much you value owning a netbook!
For me the choice was easy – I got one straight away!

MemberIn all honesty I think only you can answer this question. A 10″ NC10 is proving to be very usable for my day-to-day needs. I often only use my desktop for my professional work and gaming these days.
So potentially, yes, a 12″ screen might be great for you! If you are doing high end photo manipulation then probably not – but you’d already own a 20″+ screen if that were the case! Remember you can plug these devices into bigger screens, eg my new £150 20″ TV from Tesco has a VGA port so I hook my NC10 up to that when I want to go large! The NC10 (and I guess the NC20) can output at higher resolutions that its own screen.
I think you make a point I’ve been making and that’s the blurring of the lines between any portable laptops, whether net, note or lap – tops. Sooner or later you’ll be able to get any size you like with any spec you like. In one respect this is good for choice but in another it means people won’t know what to buy anymore! So just get an NC20 and then tell us all about it :D!
jez
MemberNo regrets. I don’t think the NC20 offers anything over and above the NC10 other than the bigger size. People looking to buy now will have to make a choice though, I don’t think there is a clear winner and will come down to personal taste.
Some people will prefer that bigger screen and keyboard and they should definitely think about going for the NC20.
I feel sorry for the person who’s ideal screen size is inbetween the two! Now that’s a tougher choice to make!
jez
MemberIronically some people will be getting them to protect themselves from just that – the “evil silver nano” that will kill off all the bacteria in your body! There are a few scare stories out there, but if you look long enough you’ll find scare stories about anything so…

MemberI find Chrome much quicker. It is also perfectly simple for general browsing.
Just click on the spanner icon in the top left and there is a delete private stuff option. There are also some options to stop it talking to google (eg the search as you type options and stuff) if you are a real tin foil hatter ;)!
The ingonito mode records no private stuff and can be started by righ clicking on a link and opening the link in ingonito mode. You can get Chrome to start in that mode every time but personally I use lots of sites that rely on cookies so have not had to look up how to do that.
