MemberHi guys. My NC10 tends to be really slow and sluggish all the time. Its been like this since I got it. When I got it I removed McAfee and installed Norton instead. Apart from that, I’ve literally only installed Firefox.
Yet when I have more than one window open, everything slows down. Firefox starts to become unresponsive with more than 1 tab open. My sister has a Eee 1000H and the performance on that is remarkably better… something’s not quite right
I ran Hijackthis and below is the list of running processes. If anyone knows how to interpret it, I can post the full log.
Thanks
Running processes:

MemberDid you look at the “tweak” sticky at the top of this forum?
Honestly I hate Norton, it’s a bloated pig of an anti-virus. I can have Photoshop open, Firefox with a bunch of tabs, Diskeeper and AIM open with no hit in normal performance. Have to defragged at all?
January 28, 2009 at 9:42 pm #181655paperclip
Memberyeh I’ve gone through most of the steps on the tweak sticky. Am defragging now (downloaded smart defrag), thanks foe the suggestion. Perhaps it is norton, but i’ve used the Eee 1000H with norton on it and its pretty nippy….
I’ll see how I get on after the defrag

MemberYour HiJackThis log doesn’t look bad, do you use Bluetooth and wired Internet? If not, you can disable those services, but they probably won’t magically make the system faster.
Beyond that, you can try taking a full test over at http://www.pcpitstop.com and seeing if they find any big issues for you to fix, I think you need to register (and easier to use IE). My NC10 appears to stop responding during the test but it does end up finishing fine.
Might also want to open the task manager to see what your CPU and memory usage is at times of slowness.

MemberAs berfles said, your HiJackThis log doesn’t look too bad, although because I prefer to run a minimal installation, I don’t have any Samsung software running on my netbook.
In contrast to your system, my running processes (under Windows 7) are:
C:Windowssystem32Dwm.exe
C:WindowsExplorer.EXE
C:Program FilesSynapticsSynTPSynTPEnh.exe
C:Program FilesWindows Sidebarsidebar.exe
C:Program FilesSynapticsSynTPSynTPHelper.exe
C:Program FilesNorton Internet SecurityEngine16.2.0.7ccSvcHst.exe
C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe
C:Program FilesTrend MicroHijackThisHijackThis.exeI’ll boot into XP and post my log from that OS.

MemberRemove Norton and see what happens…methinks at least a 50% chance Norton is the culprit. There is the odd machine that Norton doesn’t slow down, but not many.

MemberYep get rid of Norton it’s rubbish.
Why did they take Peter Norton off the cover? He was a handsome guy back in the day…….

Memberthe defragging didn’t help much. I opened 2 windows of firefox with 2 tabs each and cpu suage shot up to about 98%… weird or what?! might try getting rid of norton next
will extra ram help?

Extra RAM will always help more processes to run at the same time 🙂Having said that, if it’s CPU usage that’s shooting up, then that’s not a memory usage issue. What’s your memory usage when you open two Firefox windows with two tabs?
January 29, 2009 at 4:26 pm #181650berfles
MemberAlso, what is using your CPU at that time? If it’s Firefox, you might want to try reinstalling it or looking at any extensions you have installed. Does IE do the same thing?
January 29, 2009 at 6:49 pm #181657paperclip
MemberI’ve just re-installed firefox and its made no difference. However, IE is surpeisingly faster even though I have no extra extensions installed in firefox.
What figure should I be looking at for memory usage? The PF usage is sonsistently at about 375MB although paging file size is set to 1524MB

MemberTry installing Google Chrome – if that runs ok the issue is probably with Firefox
January 29, 2009 at 8:47 pm #181658paperclip
Memberhmmm chrome is actually much faster than firefox. is there a setting in chrome to delete all private data when i close it, like there is in firefox?
January 29, 2009 at 9:52 pm #181643MattJessop
MemberYou can go “incognito” with Chrome – google it (sorry I don’t have the settings to hand)
