Just waiting for my new intel 5300 draft n wireless card to arrive, already have the third aerial so cant wait to prize this puppy open
November 16, 2008 at 10:13 pm #169074jezMemberSo that’s a card that can go right into the NC10 to enable draft n? Is it something that will just “slot in” or is there a bit of wiring needed?
Let us know how it goes! 🙂
November 17, 2008 at 2:46 pm #169076ashesfallMemberSounds interesting, I’d be curious to know A) How easy is this to install and B) what are the benefits and effects on battery life.
November 17, 2008 at 6:38 pm #169079TheRingMemberThe internal slot is a standard pcie mini card the same as my samsung r700. The card just slots out like a memory card and replace with a new one. You dont have to fit a third aerial but by doing so on the 5300 allows the 3*3 setup (upto 450mb sync with compatible router(intels claim not mine) albeit my last draft n only hit 150mbp sync not throughput.
As for batterry life intel cards draw a lot less power in the draft n series. My r700 had the older 4965agn card (£20 from ebuyer) and there was no hit to battery life at all. The 5300 is part of centrino 2 setup and draws even less power yet range and speed increases dramatically.
Fitting the third aerial is a sinch as they come in different lengths and are not really thicker than a wire so are easy to place around the chassis.

Pics of the operation and results can be found here

November 18, 2008 at 9:16 pm #169081TheRingMemberWell just tweaked a few settings and as you can see in the lasdt pc of the set i have it sync at 300mbps just by tweaking a setting in the intel driver.
To give an idea of realworld performance as figures mean nothing. I have just streamed from my main pc a high def 720p avc file hd video file with 5.1 audio to powerdvd 8 on the nc10 via the belkin router. the device played the file without dropping a single frame and no delayed start. In comparison i could not stream the same file from the same pc to a ps3 running tversity without a delayed start (ps3 wireless g only)
very impressive espcially how easy it decoded the file

[/quote1227088769]That’s quite impressive. Initially I thought I was going to be stuck moving files to the NC10 with USB sticks but then I discovered that I could easily network it with the “Mothership” It’s fairly quick but not nearly 300mbps. Still I’d be too chicken to pop the case 🙂
November 19, 2008 at 6:59 pm #169082TheRingMemberIn fairness even though it syncs at 300mbps the chances are the throughput is more likely a third of that on a good day, but still fast enough to manager a high def title.
go on open the case you will feel better afterwards,
November 20, 2008 at 10:01 pm #169106netflyerMemberAwesome post, I am envious that you are willing to take such steps on a brand new unit. Where did you get the third antenna that you added and can you provide any details about it (model number, length, etc.)? Many thanks.
November 20, 2008 at 11:09 pm #169083TheRingMemberof course i use a company called oxfordtecuk they do various aerials but the short one is no good as its got a chunky exposed aerial i brought the 10 inch one i think which is here
there is a six inch version, but i think i brought the ten as the cable is thin and wraps easily
tbh unless your heavy handed when removing the case there is very little risk and its relatively easy to change, if the unit goes bang for any reason ill switch it back and hope lol
but as always its done at your own risk lol
November 21, 2008 at 10:19 am #169103cpaMemberHi TheRing…
First of all, Good work on updating WIFI…
Now, I will ask you something. The German & the Spanish version of NC10 comes without Bluetooth…
Could you tell us witch model of Bluetooth model comes with your NC10 model you have… Maybe we could update our NC10’s…
Also, if you could check the 4 pins (voltage and so on) for implementing…
If you want, check this link:
