I was ready to buy the NC10 and am still going to, but now the news that the NC20 is going to be sold for around $500 and released in the coming weeks…… Will the NC10 be decreasing in price by much?? or is it not worth waiting the extra month?
January 30, 2009 at 2:25 pm #181905PugriderMemberThe price of the NC10 has been moving down, with Buy.Com advertising the black model for $439.99 and other less known sites even cheaper. I don’t know if the NC20 will really debut at $500 or not, but if it does expect the price of the NC10 to drop below $400. I just saw that Paypal is offering 20% off for Valentine’s day, but have not seen the details.
Bottom line, in this economy everything is moving down in price, so if you can wait, it will be cheaper. And once you buy your netbook, it will then be cheaper and dated technology. That is the way technology works. That said, I haven’t seen any of the improvements in processor speed or graphics that blow me away for my use. The NC10 will serve you well.

The other manufacturers are readying their new models and they will be shipping out in the first half of the year, this will surely also push the NC10 down in price.
But as said above, tbh I don’t think there is much innovation and the NC10 hit a sweet spot. I guess ulitmately it depends on how much you value your money versus how much you value owning a netbook!
For me the choice was easy – I got one straight away!
January 30, 2009 at 3:38 pm #181912bcab14MemberI know that tech is always decreasing in price as the new stuff comes out and i’m definately one who waits and waits. I’m just trying to decide if its better to buy now and quench my technology thirst or to wait a couple weeks if the price will be coming down. I have a bad habit of buying things right before a price drop and getting screwed over haha
January 30, 2009 at 4:26 pm #181909mjpileggiMemberI’m one that’s waiting for prices to go down, but do want to buy one before the end of March so that I have one for my trip to France in May.
As one who will use the NC10 for my travels to do my journaling, uploading my digital photos, and having access to the Internet and Emailing, what “could” become available in the newer models that maybe I should wait? On the otherhand for what I’ll use the NC10, would there be an advantage to buying something with ‘better technology?”

The major advances in netbooks (IMHO) are the move to higher resolution screens and better graphics processors. I guess I would throw screen size in there as well – 10″ is great for some, but others might prefer the 12″ screen of the NC20, due out in February. All of the uses you describe can be easily handled by the NC10.
I did a lot of research before purchasing a netbook, and was very satisfied with the NC10 until I discovered the screen blotches that affected some of the early production models. I returned mine, and have not bought another one yet. I want to see what the reviews are like for the NC20 (there is one from a Ukraine web site now) as well as reviews and cost of the HP 2140 with a high resolution screen and possibly an SSD. The one thing I did not like about my blue Sammy was the glossy cover – I will get a white one if I get another one. The Ukrainian review indicates that the NC20 (like the HP 2140) has a glossy screen – I personally don’t like the glare from a glossy screen. So, if I had to buy right now, I would purchase a white NC10 – there is no better combination of keyboard size and battery life out there now.
I hope all this helps!

January 30, 2009 at 9:18 pm #181910mjpileggiMemberPugrider, thanks for your comments. One thing I don’t want is anything larger than 10″ since I travel light. I originally looked at one of the 8.9″ (or something close to that) and felt it was too small. 12″ may be too big.
Your comments about the white netbook, rather than a glossy cover is why I want the white.
I’ll check out the threads you provided.
February 3, 2009 at 3:32 pm #181913bcab14MemberIt appears as though the NC20 is going to be around $570 (probably before upgrades) so at that price point it isn’t even in the same market as the NC10. I wouldn’t expect that the NC10 is going to drastically reduce in price. Anyone think that is a correct assessment?

I agree. When I bought my NC10, I wanted a small, light, ultraportable netbook with a long battery life. 12″ is venturing too far into small laptop territory for me to be interested.[quote1233678488=bcab14]

Again, I agree. I am not convinced that the NC10 and NC20 occupy the same market segment. I don’t believe the release of the NC20 will have a significant impact on either the price or sales of the NC10.I believe the most impact on the sales of our NC10s will be the launch of the HSDPA enabled NC10.
February 3, 2009 at 5:29 pm #181908summertanMemberI think portability of 12″ depends not on the screen size but how much it weights. If its below 3lb I would go for 12″ versus 10″. I don’t think adding 2 inches to the screen diagonal makes it less portable. You can’t put NC10 in your back pocket anyways, you have to use some kind of a bag, so 10″ bag or 12″ doesnt really matter to me.
February 5, 2009 at 1:07 pm #181914bcab14MemberI just decided to buy instead of waiting. i’m sure the price will go down soon b/c that is my luck but i’ll be enjoyiing my Black NC10 hopefully by early next week
February 5, 2009 at 4:19 pm #181904jezMemberwell, speaking for myself, I’ve now had mine for 3 months or so and I have not found myself wanting any other model. For me it was definitely worth the price. I think it will get harder to chose as other manufacturers being out similar things for the same or less cash. But if you can live with the price it is hard to imagine many will be dissapointed wit their choice
