MemberYeah, I shoulda mentioned the sd boot – I had tried that myself in hopes… It looks like AHCI is a different kind of disk access, but not sure what it’s for in this…

MemberI just ran it last night. I noticed the HDD password – interesting. Also, in boot order, there is now a listing for AHCI HDD4. At least I’m pretty sure it’s new – didn’t notice it before…

MemberLebowski – I hate to point it out, but the first netbooks were all lousy on battery life because they were concerned about weight. It’s only recently that the battery life passed 4-5 hours at all. They are still improving, but battery weight and life are directly related until they can create a new battery design.
As for Vista – I’m not sure where you’re getting your info, but Vista will run longer on the netbook than xp as the power saving functionality is far superior. And Windows 7 is being designed for latops, more so than any previous microsoft OS, so that’d be even more efficient (I’m using it now and it’s running very well). As for the NC10 in general, as of right now, I agree that this is the perfect solution absolutely…

Memberjrdtunes – I agree completely. The 10″ is perfect sized, particularly for portability. Granted, additional desktop space would be nice for some work, I do on occasion have many windows up, but all in all, the portability is key for me 🙂

MemberActually, windows 7 is running pretty well on my machine as we speak 🙂

Membernano silver I would expect is just small particles of the stuff embedded in the keyboard keys (or at least in the paint used possibly) which is supposed to help kill bacteria. I can’t see how this could be an issue unless you constantly lick your keyboard 😉 Even then, I imagine the amount on your entire computer would not even harm you…

MemberNo refresh rate at all. That is only with CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors/tvs. The refresh rate is the rate at which the screen is drawn (or double-half drawn if it is interlaced – I know, sounds odd, but it’s drawn half a screen at a time if it’s interlaced, which most CRT tvs are). LCD is always on therefore no refresh…

Memberjrdtunes, I’ve seen many laptops for sale as he describes for about $500 on sale, however, you will not get anywhere near the battery life (2-4hrs if you are lucky) and they weight at least twice as much, so I don’t really see how they are competition.

MemberWell, just to point out note a few things… As to the ram, 95%+ of the people using computers would never use more than 2-4GB ram, and Vista runs perfectly fine with 2gb. I understand you may well have problems with vista, but every single OS, particularly those that begin with Microsoft, ALL have problems somewhere. I’ve had computers with tons of problems over decades, running various versions of windows. If you want stable on this laptop, get 2000 pro. If you actually could get drivers, it’d be significantly faster, and would be much more stable. Perhaps the OP just wants vista for it’s new features and look, there’s nothing wrong with that. Saying that he should keep XP because it is more stable, particularly since Vista SP1 is out, is really not a big reason as you might think. As to the warranty, you can do anything you want with OS or Ram and it will not affect the warranty one bit. Almost no computer companies do that.
As to the machine being designed around XP, I have to say I disagree. I can guarantee you it would cost more for them to include vista, as well as the fact that they would have to include another gb of ram. This would push it a fair bit and they are trying to keep this machine in the sub $500 range. That is why it comes with XP. If it was ‘designed’ for XP then pro would be an option, which it isn’t. It’s purely cost. There are already atom machines for sale with Vista – they work fine. Also, all of the samsung software (Bat mgr, net mgr, etc…) are all available in Vista versions, as their other laptops come with vista.
I don’t disagree that the OP should not install vista without a good reason, it won’t do a whole lot more, and it’ll cost more, but if they run it it’ll be just as stable as xp.

MemberThe easy display manager controls the FN up/down for display brightness. I do not use the magic kbd but use the EDM and it works fine…

MemberThe problem is, if you get a better gpu and a dual core processor, the battery life drops like a rock. You can’t increase power and keep battery the same without adding a lot of weight. I just got my nc10 and find it to be absolutely great! They’ve always had lightweight laptops, but at more like $2000-3000. Now I can get 6+ hours working wifi and any programs I need (no it’s not a gaming machine, and any real 3d graphics game would need more than 10″ screen to just see enough effectively). It’s a terrific blend…

Hmm, I may have to wait now.. argh!

In that case, you’ll probably be getting a new computer in 2050 😀 There is always something new 6-9 months out. Just get it when you need it 🙂As to the reduced speed reference – we can’t say that it’s true as it’s a different processor. Just comparing 1.3ghz to 1.6ghz is apples to oranges. It is certainly possible that it will be more efficient, and therefore ‘faster’ at a slower speed.

MemberI have been doing this for ever. Very simple solution. Get a copy of MiniPE (do a search 🙂 it is a windows pre install environment, so it’s a windows desktop, but designed to run from cd. However, there is a program, petousb (search again 😉 which will format a usb stick to boot with minipe. Then when you setup the computer, put the os on one partition and leave another (at least 20-30GB, although I use 40GB for the OS and the rest is other crap) and run ghost to backup to that. Works like a charm! 🙂

MemberDo a search – I found several interesting articles with pretty in depth reviews as they tried it with several levels of ram and readyboost. Generally speaking, there is no benefit. Which makes sense, since the speed of the usb is slower than the hd, so the pagefile should be better in the long run anyway. However, you can put in up to 2.5 times the ram you have. Just use 2GB of ram (not readyboost) and whatever you put on will run fine.
