MemberWell I figured this would happen! I actually own stock in Nvidia and have for quite so time. So naturally I follow them closely. For the longest time they said they were not getting into the netbook segment. And like a dummy I finally believed them and ordered an NC10 due to the fact it is the best netbook you can get. I’ve had it no less than three days…and Nvidia now announces the ION platform!!!
Thus I have already got my RMA info from Amazon.
Reports are the 9400 GPU will add about $50 or so to the cost of the typical price of a Netbook. I’d be happy to pay even more!
Anyhow I just wanted to make a post with this info as it is very significant to the netbook owners or those who are considering buying one. I like the idea of now being able to run Windows 7 w/o any issues and any other GPU intensive apps.
One thing that I did not find any info on yet is battery usage. But I’m willing to bet Nvidia has a low power setting for the GPU that can kick in.
I forgot to post the facts/links:

MemberI’ll just buy a second one when Atom dual core comes out.

MemberCannot wait, looks brilliant! I was watching a video of one your links and it did enough to make me wait lol.

MemberI just bought an NC10. Supposedly the Ion won’t be released till around summer time. By then maybe a dual core Atom CPU will be available for netbooks as well. If that’s the case, I’ll buy a new Samsung netbook then.
But that’s probably still ~6 months away, so I don’t regret buying the NC10.

MemberSince the netbook is a fairly new concept and it’s a pc, I expect any current model will look dated in a year (as will that one a year later). I’m taking delivery of my NC10 in a couple of days and as long as I can get the latest and greatest for under $500, I’ll be happy to do that every couple of years.

MemberBut how will this effect the battery life, i like getting 6 hours of battery life with my nc10 and i dont really want to do video editting on my netbook. But if they can make it draw around the same power as it does not then i will be happy, more performance and long battery life would be great.

MemberHey! Maybe now my splotches will be in High Definition? 🙁

MemberThanks, but, if I want to play games I’ll take along my Dell 17″ widescreen gaming laptop; if I just want to use a netbook for what it is designed for, I’ll take my NC-10. Sometimes I take both along. Personally, I can’t enjoy games on a 10″ screen anyway.

I think you might get your wish!
I think the current generation of netbooks has reached its pinnacle with the NC10. In price vs performance terms the NC10 is just right. I certainly wouldn’t pay much more even if it did have better graphics. I think the addition of these Nvidia chips is going to push the netbook prices up to near laptop prices and personally I couldn’t justify turning down a far more powerful/more features laptop just to save space.

ParticipantThere is a problem with the Ion though. Intel currently has the Atom platform locked to the 945 chipset. So, even though NVidia has an option available, unless intel allows it to be used, no vendor will be picking it up.
Will intel allow it? Well, it would help sell more Atoms, but less 945. Hmmm……

MemberThese wont show up until April at the earliest at which point you could probably ebay your NC10 if you’re that desperate. You can play the waiting game forever, there’ll always be something better just on the horizon. Considering how cheap they are it’s not really worth the wait without a netbook.
As for the ‘I’ll take a big laptop if I want to play games’ argument, well that’s just not an option if you are lugging a load of extra stuff around as well. The size and weight of the 10in netbooks is a perfect compromise when working away from home as it just fits in your briefcase no problem.
Anyway, I’ll be buying one of these when they come out if they are around £300. I’ll put my NC10 up for sale. Reckon I’ll probably get about £200 for it by then so £80 for 6 months or so netbooking isn’t so bad.

MemberThe problem is, if you get a better gpu and a dual core processor, the battery life drops like a rock. You can’t increase power and keep battery the same without adding a lot of weight. I just got my nc10 and find it to be absolutely great! They’ve always had lightweight laptops, but at more like $2000-3000. Now I can get 6+ hours working wifi and any programs I need (no it’s not a gaming machine, and any real 3d graphics game would need more than 10″ screen to just see enough effectively). It’s a terrific blend…

[/quote1229904817]I agree there is always going to be something bigger and better. However, in this case the leap is vast. You are going from a POS integrated video card to a dedicated GPU (and a great one at that). That is the only thing these netbooks are lacking at this time (GPU). Of course shortly after these ION PCs are out they will be releasing newer netbooks with faster GPUs and Procs. However, that is not as big as a leap as from what we have now to the ION platform. It is like going from SD to HD.

[/quote1229905142]Or the GPU makes everything work more efficiently such that it uses just as much battery power as the integrated solution. I’m sure Nvidia is going to enable the 9400 to throttle itself when it needs to be in order to operate at lower battery stressing levels.

[/quote1229913316]Using the 945 won’t be changed if they include a 9400 – it will just remove the GMA950. Intel won’t lose enough money to make it worth fighting with nvidia over this. If anything, this would open a new market for them, and increase revenue. I’ll be passing my NC10 to my wife if this becomes available.
