TCMuffin Member[quote1232821145=miserly]
question is how many of the samsung software need to be reinstalled? i’ll reinstall all the drivers, but what about batter manager and all of those programs? do they NEED to be installed?
 Thanks
[/quote1232821145]Personally I haven’t installed any Samsung software – I reckon I can manage my NC10 using Windows Control Panel. So far, I haven’t run into any problems. TCMuffin Member[quote1232803534=Britman]
Does anyone use the Portable apps system?
[/quote1232803534]No, but I do use U3 Smart Technology which was preinstalled on my SanDisk Ultra Cruzer Titanium. This has worked well for me in my job as an independent IT Consultant as I can take my software (especially diagnostics) with me to clients’ sites. I have to say that I will probably be using this less now I have my NC10 as this neat bit of kit will facilitate my trouble shooting. TCMuffin Member[quote1232802428=bkito]
Seems to be working here… though I do wish I could figure out if there is a graphics chipset driver upgrade I should be downloading…
[/quote1232802428]I have checked my display driver and I have Driver Version 8.15.10.1620 (Driver Date 17/12/2008). Hope that helps. TCMuffin MemberDid it ever go away :p January 23, 2009 at 6:17 pm in reply to: Office Alternatives, Free Applications & Useful Tools #171601TCMuffin MemberMay I suggest a really useful, free tool CCleaner. “CCleaner (originally CrapCleaner) s a freeware system optimisation, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)” I also use DriverMax. “DriverMax allows you to download the latest driver updates for your computer. No more searching for rare drivers on discs or on the web or inserting one installation CD after the other. Just create a free account, log in, and start downloading the updates that you need. You can also export all your current drivers (or just the ones that work ok) to a folder or a compressed file. After reinstalling Windows you will have everything in one place!” I also use OpenOffice 3.0, Firefox, and Thunderbird on my NC10. I use Microsoft Office 2007, Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc.on my other computers and have no problems transferring documents from any of these to my Sammy and vice versa. TCMuffin MemberWelcome miserly. I loathe recovery partitions and preinstalled crapware, so I did a clean install of XP Home as supplied on the Samsung Recovery Disk using an USB boot drive created using WinSetupFromUSB as explained in the following guide: I reclaimed the 6 GB wasted space from the recovery partition and I have allocated the disk space (all primary partitions) on my drive as follows: * 50 GB as partition hd 0,0 for WinXP * 50 GB as partition hd 0,1 for Windows 7 * 3 GB as partition hd 0,2 for linux-swap * and the remainder (about 46 GB) as partition hd 0,3 for Ubuntu 8.10 Works a treat for me 🙂 TCMuffin MemberThank you, Jez. By the way, control userpasswords2 works in Vista and 7 as well as XP. TCMuffin MemberThank you for the warm welcome, Jez. Surprisingly, the sun is shining in Cardiff this morning 😉 And thank you for the great forum, which I started using when trying to decide which netbook to buy. I’m looking forward to contributing. TCMuffin MemberOh…and our Wii….and Wii fit….and Mario Kart 😉 TCMuffin MemberMy iPod 160 GB – and my partner’s iPod 160 GB – and our house’s 80 GB iPod :p I have burned our entire CD collection to iTunes. I have also converted some treasured vinyl LPs to digital. I regularly download podcasts to iTunes and have bought downloaded music. Both our cars have iPod adapters and we have an iPod docking station at home, so we always have all our music available where ever we are. Awesome !amazed TCMuffin MemberAt the moment, we share our lives with a border collie called Badger. I’ve given a brief history of how we came to have him in the ‘New Users’ Discussion thread Time to introduce myself. A couple of ‘Oooooh’ and ‘Aaaaah’ pictures of Badger, taken before we adopted him, may be found here and here. Last summer, Badger did a sponsored swim and raised £440 for charity (split between Guide Dogs for the Blind and Dogs Trust). At about the same time as Badger was doing his sponsored swim, we fostered two 3.5 week old kittens who were dumped at our vets on a Friday evening. Their photos may be found at Sooty and Sweep’s page. When they were 12 weeks old, we took the boys to their permanent home in the Welsh mountains. They are now called Boss and Antonio and we were thrilled to have a Christmas card and photographs from them 🙂 We have no intention of being soft touches for all our vets’ waifs and strays – but life has a habit of dropping small, furry, and vulnerable creatures in our laps – and who are we to say ‘No’ B) TCMuffin MemberThank you, Rob. I appreciate your kind thoughts. Jayne TCMuffin Member[quote1232664909=bkito]

[/quote1232664909]I have installed and run DriverMax which has made installing all the latest drivers for Windows 7 a breeze, which is also true for the original XP installation. This increased my Windows Experience score from 2.2 to 2.3 – which is a marginal improvement 🙂 Prior to the driver updates, the Aero interface worked just fine. So you have question whether or not it’s worth faffing around with the latest drivers. Having said that, I’m absolutely anal about having all the latest drivers on all my systems 😉 Jayne TCMuffin MemberHi Rob The easiest way to do this is to click on: Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt In the black ‘Command Prompt’ window type: control userpasswords2 Click on the username you wish to start the computer and: Uncheck the box to the left of ‘Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.’ Click on the ‘OK’ button and you will see the ‘Automatically Log On’ window with the desired username selected. Enter your password in the ‘Password’ and ‘Confirm Password’ boxes and click on the ‘OK’ button. You will be sent back to the black ‘Command Prompt’ window which you can now close. The next time you start your computer it will automatically login to the username you selected. Hope that helps Jayne TCMuffin Member[quote1232650541=Becky]
Welcome Jayne. 🙂I’m going to guess the doggie’s name is Muffin! 😀 [/quote1232650541] Thank you for the warm welcome, Becky. I’m almost ashamed to say that Muffin is my other half’s nickname for me and TC is my nickname for my other half 😕
