MemberOK I’ve had a go with the * eg play.com
Now I think that looks pretty clear, and generally a * will provoke people to look down for a footnote if they are interested (note added to the site footer). I’m still toying with using a different colour, together or instead of a *. I’ll see how it goes 🙂

Memberlol!! Thanks for highlighting that! I won’t be holding out for my nc20 review model then ;)!

However, I do think you are a little too subtle sometimes when it comes to pointing people in the direction of affiliate sites, you should make it clearer that by clicking such and such a link will help support the site. People will not mind, after all it won’t cost them anything extra (unless they’re using you know what) Also what about getting some nice banner ads done for the site pointing to the buying guides?
[/quote1234812636]Thanks for the comments s162000. I think the idea of highlighting the links should cover the first point. It should make it obvious to people without being too intrusive (I also hate those ad links which pop up some annoying blurb!). Maybe I’m being too English but I find it a bit embarrassing raising the issue lol. Its funny because we all know popular sites like Money Saving Expert make a nice living for their owners but it is accepted that they work to make the site and everyone is happy. MSE goes a step further because they have an image of almost being a charity that acts on the behalf of its users! I think some people don’t realise just how much their links really generate! But chek out the page I’ve linked to to see their “*” links in action.
I have also thought of doing some banner ads. I’ve had a look at some banner making sites in the past – anyone know a good genuinely free one (ie without watermarks)? I then looked into making animated banners but I couldnt find a good free/cheapish animation program that would tween a couple of bits of text and a picture of a laptop!

MemberOK, just checked out the coloured links and it looks quite easy to code. Just need to test on my offline copy and I’ll upload.

Why not put up a Paypal tip jar or some such thing so we can contribute some cash towards the running costs.
[/quote1234811815]Nice idea and Im flattered to think people might help out in that way. However there isn’t really a need to with the affiliate links around the site – it is running in profit whilst NC10s are still selling! My plan is to put any proceeds aside to ensure the site can be up and running for years to come and possibly towards a new model so I can keep up to date. Not an NC20 though 😉 – nothing against it, just not different enough!
Quote:forum focusedYep I feel that sometimes too, but actually the front page does get a lot of hits so some people do read it. I do try to link everything up. So highlight key blog posts and forum posts in the FAQ and “Info” pages, link to the forum from the front and link back to the front page from the forum.
I think that’s a valuable lesson Ive learnt – try and make everything connected and accessible. The RSS feed is handy for reading the latest posts. I use Google Reader and find its a great way to track sites, you can just scan through the post titles and dip into the ones that are of interest to you.

Memberrofl! One thing I am learning from running this site is that people take things you never expected very seriously.
When I posted my NC10 box photos last year my Mrs thought it was the geekiest thing in the world. And then I explained to her the concept of unboxing videos!! ;)!

MemberTop idea Britman, I might adopt the idea that MoneySavingExpert uses – they put an “*” on the end of affiliate links. That would be well within my ability to add and should make it a bit more obvious. Perhaps a different colour is clearer than a “*”. Or maybe both!
Thanks for the kind comments all. I guess the people most likely to respond to the thread are the regular posters here so might be a little skewed ;)! But it is definitely appreciated all the same.
jez
Memberrofl – yes I thought that too! About time!
And it still comes out on top – well played Samsung!

MemberYikes £100 for the new screen. It does make you think when a new one is £300. I guess it will come down to just how bad the damage is! Any pics?
I’d probably stuggle on if it was just a few dead pixels with a view to buying a replacement when something more exciting comes along.

MemberCheers chaps. You’ll see my response is now posted on that page. It took a while to come through – I imagine some manual moderation is going on.

Note to self, must stop choosing user names that are easy to misspell 😛
[/quote1234788136]I knew I should have looked it up lol! Fixed!
It’s a good point about “tricking” generally that is frowned upon in affiliate schemes – I guess in this example it isn’t totally covert because ebay will have been under discussion in that post so it’s not like I’m redirecting you over there from a discussion on road parking. That said, obviously the links are out of place in this thread!!
I’ll have a think about it, maybe some of those links are more helpful than others.
jez
MemberThanks for sharing that, I have also linked on the blog – hope you don’t mind?!
jez
MemberAre you going to get one then? Let us know how you get on! Im sure its a matter of time before someone comes here and buys a different netbook ;)!
jez
MemberWelcome to the site? So are you running the NC10 from Solar and Wind Power? Would be interested to know more about that – might make a nice little feature :)!
And where is your unboxing vid you mentioned above – feel free to put up a link and maybe I can find a place for it. Guest posts are always welcome (with links back to your own site/blog of course!)
Cheers.

MemberHello swradioactive!
It has been mentioned once or twice but I don’t know of a specific fix. I had the same issue but ended up making the account full access which obviously is not a real solution to the problem.Would be very interested to hear of a solution if anyone knows one!

MemberTesco do seem to have an ad hoc approach to big ticket items. My local one has different deals in all the time, I occassionally get to have a cheeky look when the wife is getting the veg.

It sounds like you’ve needed a new computer for a while now jez! 😉
[/quote1234775684]Hehe I don’t need it – mine is a top spec power house complimented by a shiny netbook. My Mrs on the other hand… ;)!

portability is where netbooks win
[/quote1234775322]Yeah I agree, it is easy to forget this. I was reminded at the weekend when my brother had his cheap budget laptop with him. It was a massive briefcase and weighed a tonne! It makes sense for him as it is his only PC but there is no way I would commute to and from work with that everyday!
I think there is every justification in spending more on a slim lightweight machine if ultra portability is important to you. People will value different qualities in a different way so there is no right or wrong answer in all this.
