I saw it’s predecessor Mini 1000 at BestBuy today and the design was astonishing, simply the best looking netbook out there. The black strips on the screen give it Apple-like look. I’m seriously considering buying it.
The 3 cell battery has 3-4 hours life.
The 6 cell is better than NC10’s. It protrudes from the back, I’m not sure if I will get the 3 + 6 cell or 3 + 3 cell batteries. Have to ask HP tomorrow. The camera on the previous model Mini 1000 was reported really bad (needed extreme light to not look dark). It seems to have been vastly improved in 2140:

MemberDon’t know why, but the screen resolution seems to be 1024 x 576.
Take care about the battery life (wifi, brightness 80%, web browsing) :
3 cells : 2 H 21
6 cells : 4 H 15
On an computer with a “mat” screen you can use your computer with very low brightness (10% 15%) but it’s not possible on glossy screen (as the HP).But it’s just my opinion. It’s a very good notebook, but maybe you shoul wait for the 1366 x 768 version ? 🙂

That’s the unfortunate thing. The “better” version won’t be released until after the “standard” version, so technically the “better” version will have specifications that exceed the NC10, however, this comes at a price. It goes back to a previous comment I made and what people all around the world are discussing. When does a netbook lose its value? A netbook, in my opinion, loses its value as soon as you pay the same, or a slightly higher, price as a more powerful 15.4” laptop.

MemberI found the left and right click buttons uncomfortable the way it is placed, like on my AAO.

MemberAre you going to get one then? Let us know how you get on! Im sure its a matter of time before someone comes here and buys a different netbook ;)!

MemberOn the laptop magazine battery eater test (the first review), HP 2140 had better time than NC10:
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/hp-mini-2140.aspx?page=3
the 2 and 4 hours results must be some extreme tests not just ‘web browsing’
The deal breakers for HP 2140 for me could be unsightly 6 cell battery (whatever they say it doesnt look natural like NC10), the 10″ screen (im leaning more towards 12″) and most importantly, the unit doesnt seem to be able to open up enough. If you put it in your lap you won’t be able to open it enough to see the screen.
NC 10 has a similar problem since the maximum opening angle is about 45 degrees but it’s not that severe. Seems like because of the construction HP 2140 can’t open even that.
There always is something ….
Don’t they have testers? geezus ….February 16, 2009 at 2:53 pm #183918summertan
MemberI may wait for NC20 or the HP 12″ versions:
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4767
I am just not sure what the battery life would be on the HP 12″ if it has ‘more powerfull processor’….
February 16, 2009 at 8:41 pm #183919summertan
MemberI will hold for NC20. I called HP and they told me 2140 tilts no more than 20% from vertical. That’s not enough to use it in my lap on the couch or at the airport, on the public transport etc so the whole concept of ‘mobility’ goes down the drain.
Thats a fatal flaw for 2140 and again prime example how companies have no brains in designing their products …

MemberThe 2140 is the successor to the 2133 not the mini 1000.
They are similar but not really the same machine for a lot of reasons some obvious some not so clear.Anyway the 2133 was the best machine I have had maybe better than the NC10 except for the terrible battery life.
I understand that is one of the big changes in the 240.I also had the higher res screen and it is beautiful!.
I would have to see them side by side now to make a descision to dump the NC10 for one.

Member2133 has 9″ screen, that’s why I would go with 2140. I also don’t understand the ‘issue’ with the big resolutions. I personally don’t need such big resolutions on such tiny screens.
Laptop magazine claims excellent battery life on 2140. I called HP today and they told me the battery life that HP claims on 2140 is tested with WiFi OFF ?!?! People will use 2140 for a lot of internet browsing, whats the point of testing it with wireless off, HELLO HP ….

Memberkeyboard is pure ugliness..like the black keyboard like the ones they sell in retail stores.

MemberI’ve seen the black keyboard of HP 1035NR (I think) live and I found it quite nice, I like it better than NC10’s.

MemberThe jury is still out on the 2140, as the high definition models won’t be shipped until the first week in March. Until then all we have are CES reviews and speculation. However, unless they refresh it before the ship date the 2140 is already old technology, as it has the N270 Atom with the 945 chipset (the same as the NC10). If you are going to spend $700+ on a netbook I would suggest waiting a few months for the N280 paired with the GN40 or Ion chipset.
That being said, the 2133 was an excellent first effort by HP, and the HP Mini 1000 was a piece of garbage. I almost bought one, and am so glad I didn’t. However, the Mini 1000 came out of the consumer side of HP, whereas the 2133 and 2140 are from the business side.
Because the Asus EEE 1000HE came out with the N280 but not the GN40 chipset I still give the best netbook prize to the NC10. However, Asus will churn out another EEE with the N280/GN40 combo, and Acer will likely be the first to come out with an N280/Ion netbook, so either of those may leave the 2140 in the dust. Finally, Lenovo is planning on releasing a 12″ netbook, and if they do it right they may leapfrog ahead. I am not that impressed with what I have read about the NC20, but maybe the Via Nano will perform better than expected.

MemberI have to say I’m very tempted by the HP 2140, its form factor is ideal and it looks bullet proof. The only thing which slightly puts me off is the glossy screen and the ugly bulge of the 6-cell battery.

MemberAnd probably it doesn’t open enough to be usable in your lap. Better wait for Samsung NC20.
