MemberI did a quick test this week and it is definitely the fastest booting LiveUSB distro of the many I’ve tried.
IMHO it’s not really usable in its current state though. Wifi did work for me (in the sense that the card was active and it “saw” the available WLANs) but there was a bug that prevented me from entering the WPA passphrase (the field was limited in the number of chars like for a WEP key), so that was that.
My favourite at the moment is CrunchBang : it doesn’t boot quite so fast (again from USB) but once up and running it’s snappy and lightweight, with good Wifi and BT support and a lean, keyboard-friendly interface.

MemberGreat tip, thanks a lot Szabs ! It works just fine now, I am typing this from the live-flashkey openSuse 🙂
What I’ll be looking for now is to make this live-cd flashkey “persistent”, ie with a loopback partition in a file on the key itself (or on disk), so I can go on using it by booting from USB instead of installing it, but with changes saved between sessions (WPA key, Firefox parms etc.). This is how Puppy Linux flashdrives work out of the box, but most other distros don’t provide it.
If you know of a way to do this for openSuse I’m all ears ! 🙂
Thanks,
fpfpp
MemberSzabs, how did you prepare your openSuse livecd flashkey ? Was it 11.1 ?
I made mine with unetbootin and openSUSE-11.1-GNOME-LiveCD-i686-iso : halfway through the boot process it prints “Unable to mount RW root fs” the “Reboor in 120s” and that’s it. Any ideas ?…
TIA

MemberSuch apps are also available for Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 phones. Personally I prefer tethering the phone as a modem through Bluetooth.

I’ve done most of the tweaks listed here and my NC10 boots in 35 seconds. I’m happy with that, but it still takes another 25-30 beyond that for it to find my (or any) wireless signal and connect. Any way to speed that process up?

That is suspicious. I have also followed most, but not all, of the Howto and my Sammy is now “operational” inside of 43 seconds : that is, from pressing the power button until I see the Wifi icon in the taskbat changing to ‘connected’. This last part is only a few seconds, so there must be something going at your end… have you tried replacing the stock Windows WLAN manager with the Atheros one ?fpp

The goods on offer at the Bay link above look very similar to those from dealXtreme, also in Hong Kong. They have even more stuff, and considering that they ship worldwide at no extra cost, probably cheaper altogether.
Free shipping is not fast, mind you, but if you’re not in a hurry it’s a good deal. I ordered from them a few times last year, and up to now they’ve been reliable. Their site is like Ali Baba’s cavern, there’s a lot of junk there, but also quite a few genuinely interesting items if you dig through the pile 🙂

Coincidentally I just received today the blue sleeve I’d ordered for my blue sammy on Jan. 3rd, so it was actually quite fast for once. It’s a basic but nice-looking affair, just scratch-protection really for hauling around in my padded backpack. Of course the blue hue is not the same as the sammy’s, but hey, for 8$ shipped from Hong Kong I’m not going to complain ! 🙂

MemberThe cutoff is definitely by software, as several Linux distributions show the same behaviour on the NC10, and need an update to the sound libraries (ALSA) to correct it.

MemberOkay, I had forgotten how I’d got the DSL key working and had to retrace my steps… A dose of SysLinux got the MacPup key booting again. The GUI is indeed cute 🙂
Now I’m stuck on the Wifi part. I installed the patch as per your indications above, but can’t get any connection. Scanning reports no networks most of the time. Once in many tries it found a WLAN, but not mine, as there are at least half a dozen the Sammy sees under Windows here. Must have overlooked something again…

Anyone got one of these, or a similar model??http://www.trust.com/products/product_detail.aspx?item=15606

Looks extremely similar to the one I posted in the sticky “compendium” thread in this section yesterday.
Perhaps a bit more compact, and comes with a BT dongle that is not needed here.
In any case my Trust BT mouse works perfectly as a Sammy companion, no reason this one wouldn’t…Edit : seems to be physically exactly the same as mine, except for a slightly higher resolution, which is probably just a marketing gimmick.
You should go for the 8700 model which comes without a BT dongle and should be cheaper, or a 5700 model like mine if you can find one.fpp
MemberUpon reflection, the trouble may be from that previous DSL installation.
I tried reformatting the stick from Windows and reinstalling MacPup.Now upon boot it says “Remove drives and press a key”.
Hmmm…. 🙂
fpp
MemberAnother silly question : is there something else to be done with the USB stick before or after installing the MacPup ISO with Unetbootin ?
Mine just displays “boot error” at startup and stays there.
I did have DSL booting from it previously…fpp
MemberReeshar, thanks for the tip. It seems most Linux distros, big or small, have issues with the NC10 Fn-keys for screen adjustment and such. How does MacPup fare in this regard ?
TIA,

MemberDevice Type: Mouse; Bluetooth wireless
Brand: Trust
Model: Bluetooth Optical Mini Mouse MI-5700Rp
Level of Functionality:
Works great right out of the box.
No need to install drivers, no dongle.
Gadgets : a button to switch DPI resolution (for gamers), back/forward buttons (for browsing)
An almost-full sized regular mouse (I hate “mini” mice) with a good grip and good battery life using two AAA cells.
Less expensive (at the time) than brand names (Logitech/MS etc.)
Does not seem to be available in white, but the grey/black version is OK with the keyboard on the black & blue sammies.
Comes with a little pouch.http://www.trust.com/products/product_detail.aspx?item=15351
