May 5, 2009 at 11:18 am in reply to: Confirmation that the black NC10 does not have a glossy screen? #190739TCMuffin MemberYep – sitting in front of my black NC10, I can confirm that it has a matt screen 🙂 TCMuffin MemberGood find and interesting link. Thank you orb9220 🙂 TCMuffin MemberWhen I received my NC10, one of the first things I did was to reformat the drive and reinstall XP which removed the recovery partition. FWIW, I’ve never regretted it. Apart from anything else you gain access to the fastest part of the drive which was used for the recovery partition. TCMuffin MemberWelcome to the forum, DarkSaber007 🙂 I’m sure that any of the Samsung netbooks will fit your needs, but I’m very happy with my NC10 and if you need the extra battery life of the SE version, you could buy a 9 cell battery 😕 However, as Gav2k says, the 2 GHz Atom is coming on stream, so it may be worth waiting if that’s an option for you. TCMuffin MemberYou can buy a replacement UK keyboard for £39 + VAT + p&p from Laptop Bits. TCMuffin MemberThank you for taking the time to post your interesting review, dennya 🙂 TCMuffin MemberWelcome to the forum, Valtzer 🙂 I’m sorry I can’t help with your question, but I’m sure one of the other members will be along soon with an answer. May 3, 2009 at 11:25 am in reply to: Advice wanted on Win 7, voice-recognition software, and memory features #190608TCMuffin MemberWelcome to the forum, ronmoule 🙂 [quote1241349080=ronmoule]
I need to know which operating software to use: is Win 7 available, and reliable? ( I hate Vista and have dumped it for XP, myself)
 [/quote1241349080]
Samsung netbooks are delivered with XP installed.[quote1241349080=ronmoule]
As some of us as visually-impaired, voice-recogntion is vital: will Dragon Naturally Speaking work well on the NC10 and /or 20. Anyone with direct experience of voice commands?
 [/quote1241349080]
Both the NC10 or NC20 meet the minimum system requirements for Dragon NaturallySpeaking.[quote1241349080=ronmoule]
Finally, the NC10 looks light, but the NC20 sturdier with better screen size.
Which would you go for, with experience of both
 [/quote1241349080]
I only have experience of the NC10, but my guess would be that for people with visual impairment, the bigger screen (and keyboard) of the NC20 may be the better option.[quote1241349080=ronmoule]
how to get 2gb without technical knowledge. Hate opening up cases and fiddling.

Don’t worry installing the 2 GB RAM chip only involves removing one screw, removing the cover, removing the old chip, installing the new chip, replacing the cover, and replacing the screw. Jez has written a really good guide to installing the extra RAM and there is a video guide on the Laptop Magazine site.Hope that helps. May 3, 2009 at 10:45 am in reply to: Kingston 2GB upgrade for NC10/NC20 £13.49 @ Play.com delivered (UK only sorry!) #189280TCMuffin MemberThank you, John, for expanding on my throw away warning. I’d sort of assumed that folks would know that whilst the battery is installed there is always a trickle charge to any electronic device. But then we all know that assume makes an ass out of u and me !lol This is why to cold boot any battery powered device (e.g. a laptop or mobile phone) you need to press and hold the on/off or remove the battery. On a completely different tack – did you know that you if you have a stubborn problem with your mobile phone, you can return a mobile phone to its factory state by: -
Turn the mobile off

 *Remove the SIM
*Turn it back on again (answer yes or OK to ‘Do you want to turn it on without a SIM’ or similar question)
 *Turn it off again
 *Replace the SIM
*Turn it on againBy the way, any data saved on the chip or phone is still safe – you will not lose any information. May 3, 2009 at 10:24 am in reply to: Problem: "Acquiring network address" forever w/o connecting #190575TCMuffin MemberDoes your friend’s router have MAC address control activated? If so, try this: -
Disable MAC address control

 *Connect your computer
*Get your Sammy’s MAC address from the DHCP Client list
*Adding your NC10’s MAC address to the allowed list
*Reactivate MAC address controlThe other thing I’d try is to cold boot your NC10 – press and hold the on/off button until the Sammy turns off and turn it on again. TCMuffin MemberWelcome to the forum, Martin, and thank you for such an interesting first couple of posts. I’ll be really interested to know the results of your RAM experiment 🙂 You may be interested in this guide to optimising Firefox and Tiny Menu, a Firefox add-on which replaces the standard menu bar with a tiny menu popup. Oh…and I also use AdBlock Plus and NoScript with Firefox. Once you have Firefox looking and behaving as you want it to, you can use MozBackup to backup settings, favourites, etc. TCMuffin MemberHi Elephant Download and install CCleaner. Start CCleaner and run the cleaner and scan for registry issues. Go to tools and check which programs are starting and disable any unessential programs, e.g. on my Vista machine I have only three programs starting and on my NC10 I also have only three programs starting (two for bluetooth and one for my touchpad). Try restarting your computer in normal mode and see what happens. If you still have problems uninstall any programs you don’t recognise and don’t need and run the cleaner again and scan for registry issues. Try restarting the computer again and report back 🙂 May 2, 2009 at 5:21 pm in reply to: Vista Desktop – XP NC10 – problems connecting to each other. #190479TCMuffin MemberYes – LLTD is installed in SP3, as this was a common problem when Vista was released. Try turning off your firewalls on both machines and see if you can see the machine then. If you can, configure the firewall of the Vista machine to allow access from your XP machine. You may have to put Vista files in the Public folder to be able to access them from the NC10. You may find this article interesting: How do I network my Vista and XP PCs together?
