It’s definately competing with notebooks at £411.98…. and I think the notebooks have the upper hand. Seeing as the NC10 launched at £300 I would say the NC20 needs to be in the £350-£370 area to stand any chance.
January 15, 2009 at 6:37 pm #177993berflesMemberI’ve been hearing $600 at least for the NC20. Way too much.
Then again, the NC10 is also expensive.
January 16, 2009 at 2:10 am #177985SzabsMemberVIA FTL. Nano takes up more Watt than it should. Shorter battery life. Chrome9 is a piece of poop. Don’t even dream about anything serious with that graphics card.
January 16, 2009 at 3:20 am #177997summertanMemberMy expectation is that NC20 will have blown up price. The manual mentions several components as ‘optional’. I expect them to start about $600 without the ‘optional’ components and increase the price when the consumer adds an ‘optional’ component. That will soon lead outside of the netbook price range. If you want to pay that money, better buy white MacBook. Otherwise I don’t expect NC10 to be beaten in its price range.
January 16, 2009 at 8:26 am #177983snowmanMemberI think the Dell Mini 12 sets the price point here.
Anything that’s much dearer than that will be instantly uncompetitive.

January 16, 2009 at 10:00 am #178004Dom01MemberIt is going to cost a bit more than I expected! Still I am still interested in the VIA parts in it and how they perform. NC10 has rubbish graphics but it still amazes me with some of the things it runs! I guess low expectations to begin with makes it easy to impress!
January 16, 2009 at 9:51 pm #178010bydusMemberAnyone has an idea if 1.3 VIA Nano will be faster than NC10 Atom 1.6? Also the graphics seem to be better, but read some post that its “crap”. I really want to get NC10 and I love everything about it from the reviews (black, great battery) but now that NC20 is coming up I’m not sure. If you were to get NC20 which is larger would you still go for NC10 ? Please help me out here.

[/quote1232153366]I originally intended to purchase the NC10 when it first appeared in the UK after hearing about it a month or so before and being really interested. The idea was that a cheap “less than notebook” to be outside of the main home PC would be great.. for net use, etc. Finally got one about two weeks ago (black) and I can honestly say that its a lovely little machine *but* I am returning it soon because I personally find the “net” (in “net” book) experience to be terrible if truth be told.
Browsing the internet the way *I* do requires me to have easy access to my ‘favourites’ so I can zip along (I use Firefox, Opera and to some extent Chrome, regularly).. and I work generally with the browser window open and my favourites window on the far left.. listed.. for easy access just a simple click away. I have always worked this way.. and I find having to organise my environment any other way to be a chore. I hate having to “move the mouse… click to open favourites window… select .. hide window [for space reasons]..” etc.. (or finding a way around it is even more tedious and does not really work for me.. at least) ..
The point I am trying to make is that its great ‘initially’ .. the 600 down is not a major issue, but you do soon appreciate what a little more resolution beyond 1024 would do for your everyday needs. 1024×600 is simply not good enough if the truth be told (regardless of what people will say.. it just gets in the way and makes browsing a chore) .. SO, that being said.. I would recommend you wait for the NC20 or buy a cheap notebook to do a better job. The NC20 will be fine IF the customers are not taken advantage of AGAIN in terms of pricing. The markup on the NC10 was bad enough.. (£340, £320, £310..) etc.. they are having a laugh (I paid £320 if you want to know) and if the NC20 is anything above £375 then they can take a running jump. Battery life beyond 4 hours might be a selling point for some, but a netbook (low powered, fugly machines) should have low low prices.
Have a good think about it.. but if you take the ‘browsing’ side seriously, every little extra resolution will make your life sooo much better.
January 17, 2009 at 3:55 am #178011bydusMemberWoa, thanks a lot for the response! I decided to wait few weeks until some good reviews come up! Still I would generally use it for school (reading PDFs, browsing, occasionally low end gaming. I had a chance to have a look at NC10 and I’m not sure If I want a larger net(note)book. Yes I agree, having 1024×600 is a bit of a pain, but I could live with it I guess.. I don’t think I’ll be doing any serious Photoshoping that would require more space, more Linux command line type of stuff as my course is related to it. Again thank you for your point of view. Any NC10 owners want to share their view of 1024×600 ? Thanks.
January 17, 2009 at 10:43 am #177981s162000MemberBydus, personally I have no problems using 1024×600 for browsing and i’m on the net a lot, I use Firefox and disable the bookmarks toolbar for some extra space. I’ve heard that Chrome gives you some more space as well. I think you need to draw up a list of things you need from your netbook and see which of the NC10 or NC20 ticks the most!

January 19, 2009 at 3:04 pm #178005Dom01MemberHigher res is all ways good but on a 10″ screen I think it would be of no use at all! I find the res just fine and can surf comfortably. if you are used to having your favorites down the side of the screen then fair enough I can see you having problems but I think for the most part that is a fairly unusual way to surf. If that is teh way you do it tho then a higher res screen is a must and you need a bigger screen if you want that.
January 19, 2009 at 6:46 pm #177984mauwongMemberI surf the net like elysium (w/ the favorites open on the side) when I’m using my desktop which is connected to my 32-inch HDTV, and I find it very convenient. However, my Sammy (NC10) serves it purpose when I’m travelling. I’m good with the smaller screen size given its portability and battery life. I look at it more as finding the right balance for your needs (i.e., whether screen size is more important than weight).

[/quote1232480255]I am glad the guys here managed to help you. I found it very frustrating at first trying to work out whether an NC10 would do the job, from advice on here I got one and it does by miles. You can find my thread in GD where I have it running Autodesk Civils CAD 08 and Adobe SC3 Master Suite very well with the stock XP home and 1GB memory build (to me it performs and benches similar to an AMD XP1800/2000+).
From the reviews, the VIA Nano 1.8 is a good bit ahead of the Atom 1.6 in benchmarks but the NC20 will have the 1.3 so you could imagine it may be 20% behind the Atom.
As for graphics, the Nano is supposedly better equipped depending where you read, but these really aren’t gaming machines. Even the likes of the 9200/9300M series only just make some more modern titles barely playable.
I imagine it will be well into next year when we see netbooks which can play more modern games at ok detail but still keep a low power draw and high battery life, say 4 hours + whilst gaming.
To me, netbooks with sub 2-3 hour battery lives or less, defeat the object of having then and although they are portable, their functionality goes out the window. For anything else just buy an ultra portable. If the NC20 comes in at £400 then the Samsung Q210 is only £485 and that’s core 2, GF9200m, dvd drive, vista specced.
I think the lines are blurring at the moment between netbook and notebook and the NC20 is a prime example.
I imagine by the end of the year we will see a more definite netbook / sub notebook / ultra portable / notebook divide with clearer performance margins.
