Member…..and I always turn off indexing…..why take a hit on performance which will only benefit you once in a blue moon, when you search for a file/folder 😕

Brilliant ingenuity, great soldering technique (I know it was pre-soldered, but I’m still impressed), totally awesome. Thank you for sharing 🙂

Member+1 for the performance gain from performing a ‘clean’ install of an OS.
One of the first things I did with my NC10 was to reformat the HDD and reinstall WinXP – which of course included removing the recovery partition. Why would you want one of these if your computer is supplied with a recovery CD?

I fancy taking my nc10 when I go mountain biking to do some work up in the highlands (sounds good to me!) .. this would need to be waterproof and fairly rugged
[/quote1263602149]If I was going to subject my beloved Sammy to such treatment, the only case I would trust would be a Peli. I don’t have experience of entrusting my NC10 to one of these – I wouldn’t be so rough with it – but I have used a Peli case for camera gear and the protection it gave my kit was awesome 🙂TCMuffin
MemberHave to agree with Jez – on both counts 🙂
Welcome to the forum, btw 🙂

MemberHi RSIboy and welcome to the forum 🙂
I’m not sure about the N220 or N110, but I know that the NC10 will accept a faster RAM chip than the motherboard can cope with, so the motherboard effectively throttles back the speed of the RAM.
Hope that helps 🙂

Samsung Update plus does not work for me.
[/quote1263546081]Samsung Update Plus doesn’t seem to work for most people with any of the Sammy netbooks. Most people have uninstalled it and manually check the Samsung website for updates 🙁TCMuffin

it will be very interesting to learn what your real time battery life will be while taking these courses.
[/quote1263544103]I’ll let you know – our next week of lectures is Computer Law which starts on 15 February – so it wont be for a while 🙂[quote1263544103=dockehr]
I would imagine that there would be very limited WiFi accessing while you’re in the classroom.
[/quote1263544103]Actually the University has excellent facilities and is covered by a powerful wireless network which can be accessed from anywhere within the campus. The only place you’re not allowed to use your laptop is in one of the computer labs.[quote1263544103=dockehr]BTW good luck with the advanced course.
[/quote1263544103]Thank you, dockehr, I appreciate your good wishes 🙂[quote1263544103=dockehr]Will your avatar reflect the university colours when you complete the MSc? Maybe a split avatar sporting the university colours and Badger!
[/quote1263544103]Oh no – I daren’t – Badger used to go to work with me whenever possible – which was most times. So, he’s already ticked off with not being able to go to school with me 🙁TCMuffin

Windows would shut down and I’d get this (scary) blue screen that came on too quickly for me to read but said something like “Windows shut down to prevent damage…” The netbook would then reboot but every time it did, the same thing would happen.

For some reason Windows is set up by default to automatically restart the computer in the event of a system failure. I have no idea why it does this, as if you have a system failure you want to be able to read the error message, so that you can work out what’s gone wrongTo rectify this:
In Windows XP: Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel > System. In the System Properties window, select the ‘Advanced’ tab and click on the third ‘Settings’ box by ‘Startup and Recovery Options’. Click on the little white box next to ‘Automatically restart’ in the ‘System failure’ part of the window.
In Windows 7: Click on Start > Control Panel > System. Click on ‘Advanced system settings’ which is the fifth option down on the left hand side of the window. In the System Properties window, select the ‘Advanced’ tab and click on the third ‘Settings’ box by ‘Startup and Recovery Options’. Click on the little white box next to ‘Automatically restart’ in the ‘System failure’ part of the window.
If you replace the faulty RAM you can now make a note of the Windows stop code which will be something like:
STOP 0×0000000A – IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
STOP 0x0000002E – DATA_BUS_ERROR
STOP 0×00000050 – PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
STOP 0x0000007F – UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAPThe stop code will be useful when you contact Crucial to sort out a replacement RAM chip 🙂
[quote1263492398=chconnol]
I went onto the Crucial website and they have a mechanism where they narrow down the choices for upgrading RAM by selecting the brand, then the model. The one I purchased did not come up as one of the choices.

As Alfihar says, if it was the wrong RAM it would have never worked and the most likely cause of your problem is faulty RAM. FWIW – I’ve bought and installed about 50 RAM upgrades from Crucial and, on one occasion, I had a faulty chip. I contacted Crucial and they sent a replacement chip which arrived the next day. -
