I have a 12mb line. I get a solid 10mb on my wired main computer. I get a solid 7mb download (wifi) on my Dell laptop, but only a maximum of 3mb on the Sammy. Most of the time it’s down to about 2.4 mb download speed. I’m not sure why the Dell is about three time faster with wireless speed than the Samsung, but the NC10 is just not fast enough for me. In fact, it’s a deal breaker. Unless I can get it corrected, I’m afraid the NC10 must go back. I bought this for the sole purpose of internet browsing. Any ideas?

Which Wifi standard does your Dell have, i.e. the NC10 has a b/g modem (as do most netbooks). If your Dell has a b/g/n modem it will have a faster download rate.
May 24, 2009 at 11:46 am #192430jeepers01ParticipantThat doesn’t sound right at all you should expect the same speed on the sammy.
I am not as lucky as you ( wish I had a 12Mb line!) I get 3.3Mb to 3.8Mb on sammy, other laptops and main pc with a Netgear 834G router supplying the lot. ie. all the same throughput.
I can only synch at between 3.8 and 4.5Mb on the router because I am a long way from the exchange.Like Jayne says check your router b/g or n settings, but as g standard is 54Mb you should get your 7Mb to match the Dell with no problems, I would have thought
Assume its not a wireless signal strength issue
It will help if you can tell us you setup and wireless driver versions you have
May 24, 2009 at 4:55 pm #192434ricwhiteMemberThanks for the responses thus far. The Dell laptop also has a b/g modem. I have a Netopia router. The signal strength on the NC10 is excellent. I’m really quite close to the router. It almost appears there’s a limiter on the Samsung. Sometimes when I first test my speed, it’ll jump to 5-6mb but then quickly fall and just hang at between 2.4 and 3mb. I initially thought that there must be a power saving option activated which limited my speed, but not so. So I’m still stumped on this. I connected a LAN cable to test it and it tested at about 10mb. Wireless is averaging 2.5mb.
I tried to download a trailer and it took SO long. This will drive me crazy.
May 24, 2009 at 5:48 pm #192431jeepers01ParticipantHave you tried with wireless encription turned off – ie. open
I have Atheros AR500 7EG adaptor 7.6.1.160 driver version 07/10/2008 sitting on IRQ16
Might be worth checking nothing else is sharing the IRQ on your sammyThere have been several posts about the latest Atheros drivers not connecting properly with various routers. It may be worth considering rolling back the driver if you have the latest

I bought a 3 Dongle and download at – wait for it… 400 KILO bytes (Bits) ! Now I’m wiating for my Tiscali broadband contract to expire
Brian.May 25, 2009 at 8:01 pm #192423TCMuffinMemberOh poor Brian :((
Virgin Media XL package (20 Mbps ) download speed in Llandaff, Cardiff – 20.76 Mbps 🙂
Still waiting for 50 Mbps to be available in Llandaff 🙁
May 25, 2009 at 8:35 pm #192435ricwhiteMemberTried turning off encryption and disabling anti-virus software. No luck. I’m getting a steady 2.3 to 2.5mbps instead of the 7 or 8 I had hoped no matter what I try. Since I’m getting 7 or 8 on my other wifi laptop, this is very disappointing. I just don’t get it.
May 26, 2009 at 7:11 am #192428Mars MugMemberTry lowering the MTU in the router, it should be a maximum of 1492 for DSL, but try something like 1400 or 1350.
May 26, 2009 at 10:41 am #192427mcapriMemberDid you try TCP Optimizer?
You can find it here : http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
It worked for me!May 26, 2009 at 10:45 am #192424cm17MemberNo problems with speed on NC10 here. Getting between 5 – 12 mbps depending on time of day and location of site being browsed. Same across all machines in house.
How long does it take you to transfer a large file across the network? IE between your wired machine and Dell compared to your wired machine to the NC10.
Have you checked the B or G option? The NC10 can work in B or G wireless (B being much slower, typically between 2-3 mbps which sounds like your machine). It’s possible for a router to broadcast in mixed mode (B+G at the same time). Try setting your router to broadcast just G and see if your NC10 can receive it. It sounds like your NC10 might have defaulted to B wireless for some reason.
May 27, 2009 at 1:25 am #192436ricwhiteMemberMy router is broadcasting in “g” wireless only. Sammy is receiving it fine. It’s just slow. A 20mb file is taking about 18 seconds to download on my main wired computer. It takes about 25 seconds on the Dell wireless. On the Samsung wireless it takes 47 seconds. I download a lot of trailers and stream a lot of tv and movies. I need to get the Sammy up to speed. No luck yet.
May 27, 2009 at 4:13 am #192429Gav2kMemberGav you tried tweaking the settings
May 27, 2009 at 1:00 pm #192425cm17MemberProbably a silly question – have you tried connecting your NC10 to another network to see if the speed is still limited using another connection / router.
May 27, 2009 at 11:28 pm #192432jeepers01ParticipantI agree with cm17’s suggestion plus have you tried other Atheros drivers.
Depending on the router you have there are known problems with certain routers not working properly with certain Atheros drivers.
This has been discussed elsewhere on the forum – a quick search will reveal more on this subject
