Relief! My posts made sense. I tried to be as meticulous as I could!
I will give all this a go tonight
Thank you
Sarah
November 3, 2011 at 10:44 pm #220596LondonSaritaMember[h=4]Back again!
Jeepers I have followed your instructions from the ‘In Summary’ part of your post:
Re-enable 8192e adaptor – yes, did that
Try to connect – managed to stay online for about three minutes
Try system restore – this would only let me go back to August 2011 so no good as I need to go back to at least March of this year
IPconfig /all
Here are the results:[/h][h=4]Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600][/h](C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.C:Documents and SettingsSMAYBANK>ipconfig /all

Then I tried to roll back rhe driver but it would not do this and just said ‘there is no back up driver’. There was a ‘trouble shooting’ option that I had a look at and it said the driver might be corrupt and to uninstall and reinstall it but I decided against that until I had consulted with you.
Then I did a restart
Tried to get online – it stayed online for a round and a half of the recent Nathan Cleverly fight on YouTube – about 7 minutes in all
Then I did another ipconfig /all
Here are the results

November 3, 2011 at 11:51 pm #220577jeepers01ParticipantLondonSarita – Try downloading and installing this driver
REALTEK Win XP 1678.0.1019.2009Make a note of the current driver before installing so it’s known.
Hope this helps

Your welcome
A few items to perhaps add to your list for the weekend. Hope Friday night was enjoyable 🙂Both ipconfig’s look good and it appears to connect now for about 3 mins each time but when it drops out is it still saying it’s connected? Do an ipconfig /all output so we can see the state of the connection before re-booting when/if it drops out again.
Were there any other users on the wireless when it happened? Was anyone else logging into or out of the router at this time do you know?
Also when it drops out hover over the wireless icon in the sysyem tray (bottom right of screen) and see if it offers to ‘Repair’ the connection, if so procede with it.
Which Netgear router model number do you have?
Re-boot it – power it down – wait 10 seconds and power up again. Re-boot the sammy after the router has come up.If not already done – change the advanced settings under the network adaptor (Realtek RTL8192E Wireless Lan 802.11n PCI-E NIC) wireless mode value to IEEE 802.11b/g.
Is the router set for WEP encryption? If it is set to WPA-PSK go to advanced settings and change AES to TKIP or vice versa.
Whilst in settings also disable Power saving mode.
Use the free [URL=”http:// http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/”%5DinSSIDer [/URL]wifi scanner to see if there is a free gap from channels 1 – 11, then change the router wireless channel accordingly to keep away from other networks broadcasting on channels in the vicinity. The wireless landscape may have changed since you last checked.
On my network I use Channels 1, 6 or 11 to minimise interference but if a neighbour is using channels 5 or 8 then they could be interfering with your network if set to channel 6. Remember many other devices use the same frequency spectrum and can interfere (DECT phones and wireless weather stations for example). Even microwave ovens can interrupt transmissions in certain circumstances.Your current DNS is 194.168.4.100 and I would still recommend changing it to 208.67.220.220 (which is http://www.opendns.com) and I have always found it very reliable with very fast ping times.
If all the above fails to get reliable connectivity then go to Device Manager and uninstall the Realtek 8192e card, scan for hardware changes and re-boot and it will reinstate it and search out a driver. You will need to make the above changes again (b/g, AES/TKP, Power Saving and probably the driver)
As you may have read on other postings on the forum, the 8192E card has caused problems for a lot of people so you are not alone but hopefully it will become more stable now for you and function correctly.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi Jeepers
sorry to sound like total dimbo but when you say make a note of the current driver before I download the one you suggested, do I just write down the name of it as it comes up on my computer when I look at the available drivers, or is there a more involved name for it that I need to find? Thanks

Just make a note of the driver version installed currently with Device Manager > Network Adapters > Realtek 8192E on the Driver Tab.
The screen shot below shows a Broadcom adapter on my Acer laptop as an example.
It’s just nice to know what’s installed currently before changing the driver, not too important really. The forum is running particularly slow tonight and might be causing your frequent log outs
Hope this helps

It’s free don’t pay. Hit the big red download button 🙂 Hope this helps
November 8, 2011 at 8:02 pm #220600LondonSaritaMemberHi
Thank you for that
Clicked the button, the red oneI get as far as this
http://www.netbookfiles.com/2278/download/samsung-n130-wireless-lan-44realtek-win-xp-920419/Then a wheel goes round on my tabbed browser saying ‘connecting’ and that is that
Presuming this is because the dongle I have borrowed is so limited
Will report back later 🙁
November 10, 2011 at 4:06 pm #220602LondonSaritaMemberOK, finally got to change the driver and changed the DNS as suggested (well I didn’t, the person who looks after the router did). I also checked the router settings and they are WEP and so am I.
The computer had been dropping out whether or not anyone else is using the router – it doesn’t seem to make any difference.
Also, in the past, I have tried the ‘Repair’ option as suggested, but it has never made any difference.
Computer is currently online without being helped by the dongle so fingers crossed 🙂
This is the ipconfig all, while I think about it.
Sorry am not expecting a reply for this post – just writing it all down so I know what I have done.

November 12, 2011 at 9:59 am #220603LondonSaritaMemberHi Jeepers
Just want to thank you for your help as the issue seems to be more or less dealt with (fingers crossed). After my last posting, I managed to get a day’s worth of much better internet. There were a few drop outs and I had to repair the connection a few times but still, it was a lot better than before.
Yesterday, the connection went back to how it had been (no connection, but with computer telling me I was connected, and did I want to disconnect. It veered between this and a message saying ‘limited or no connectivity’) All the usual stuff in other words, and my heart sank.
I went through your list and I disabled the ‘n’ connection and now things seem to be OK. The pages load a bit slowly but at least they are loading.
This has been causing me so much frustration for so long that I can barely believe it’s resolved but I want to thank you for your help and patience as I really was ready to chuck my computer in the river.
One other thing – in my research on this issue I was reading yesterday that it is often driver updates that cause these wi-fi problems so I have disabled my updates. DO you think that’s an OK idea?
Thanks again
Have a brilliant weekend
Sarah
