Intel has set up an application centre for Atom-based machines called AppUp. It is similar to Apple’s iPhone/iTouch app centre – but it is still in Beta and has a limited selection of apps at the moment. Also, it looks like it’s only for US and Canadian users at the moment. I started to register and was only given the options of choosing the US or Canada as my country (I am UK based), so I gave up.
Some of the apps are free and others are paid-for. Some of the prices seem steep compared to Apple apps – $9.99 for Solitaire games, for example!
You can download the AppUp software from here:

The software runs under Windows XP or 7, but not Vista.
I found it a bit difficult to navigate with no apparent Back button.See what you think.

If this takes off like the Apple app store (as, no doubt, Intel hopes it will), it could be lucrative for developers – especially those that get in early. There is a (free?) downloadable development kit here. Having heard the stories about what some iPhone app developers have earned, it may be worth having a go.

I just read this on the site:-
The Intel AppUp(SM) client BETA and all applications available through the center have been verified to run on Microsoft Windows XP Home SP3* and Microsoft Windows 7* Starter versions only. Other versions of Microsoft Windows* or other operating systems are currently not supported. Any changes or updates regarding supported operating systems will be announced here.
They are my bolds in the text.
I found that by clicking ‘Product and Performance Data’ at the bottom of the page. Interesting, hmmm.

Haven’t heard of any of the apps in there. I take it these are developed with some Intel SDK. Would that mean they are optimised for Atom and netbooks?
Could be good for performance if they are.
Also of interest is the store is also avaialble for Moblin. Whether that means it will work with the netbook version of MeeGo I’m not sure. Maybe it will at the moment, but I suspect as MeeGo is Intel/Nokia they may move to the Ovi store for apps. Theory is that MeeGo apps can work on both netbooks and Nokia MeeGo mobile devices.
