October 4, 2009 at 1:37 am #175405writedoc MemberAnother possible performance tweak to improve performance and battery life. From the battery test results at http://www.umpcfever.com/news/?postid=1623, it appears that under light load that enabling the CPU Power Saving Mode improves battery life by about 2.8% (10 mins); however, under heavy workload the opposite is true, disabling it improves battery life by about 4.9% (14 mins). Since I want to maximize battery life under heavy load (which I’m assuming is anything when CPU load is > 25%, like when playing a movie), I’ve disabled the CPU Power Saving Mode (Press F2 while starting up to access BIOS). In my case, I did notice better system response with the CPU Power Saving Mode disabled (as indicated by windows opening faster etc). Lovely post OP. But I disagree about the Partitioning. Since each partition involves creation of dedicated index tables, the system will be faster with a drive with two partitions since at one time, it will only access only one partition, with a smaller index table (you see searching is easier)…..

Another reason for using partitioning is so that you can backup your system drive complete with your latest settings and installed applications; this can be very useful if you install something that starts doing strange things to your system. For example, in addition to the hidden 6GB original OS partition, I have a 30GB partition (C drive) for the OS and applications and a 112GB partition (D drive) for all my data files. After updating my OS or installing new applications I backup my complete C drive to my D drive, I’ve already used the backup a few times. When setting up your applications on your C drive, don’t forget to set their data storage paths to your D drive, otherwise you will lose your data when you restore your C drive; for example, to change your data storage path for Outlook Express: click on Tools > Options… > Maintenance > Store Folder…. To change your system data storage locations to your D drive, use TweakUI and select My Computer > Special Folders (for example, select Favorites and change location to your D drive).October 21, 2009 at 11:45 pm #175413tankfly MemberThanks Freddo, for this thread. I first read it 8 months ago while I was waiting for my Sammy NC10 to arrive (bought on eBay). I didn’t try any of the mods back then ’cause I wanted to try the NC 10 prét a porter in the field. As a journalist I needed a light netbook with a good battery life that could connect quickly and easily to various USB peripherals and the internet (via USB 3 Mobile BB). It did exactly what it said on the tin.
A few things bothered me though, the Windows startup and shutdown was tedious (4-8 minutes). I also thought that some of the program responses were a little slow.So last week I decided to finally reread this thread and go through your mods, one by one.
After backing up all data, I restored XP sp3 & updated Windows, McAfee, Samsung & bought a prescription to DriverMax. I recorded each installation with BootVis (incidentally if I could do it over I would not have upgraded to DriverMax Pro (€ 8.13) just stick with the free version d/l two drivers per day, take your time about it.The registry tweaks definitely work by freeing up system resources.
I shaved a good 20 seconds off bootup by disabling bluetooth in services and startup in msconfig
I have four startup items, RocketDock, SynTPEnh, DMLoader & BatteryManager.
I keep only McAfee Firewall running, but disabled all updates and help/assistance programs (I’ll activate them when I need them), other than that all Microsoft services start up as normal. After many many BootVis traces I honed my startup to 17 seconds (shutdown in 5, Hibernate in 8 )
TaskManager shows 26 processes.BattStat shows that my battery has 17% wear, which is amazing considering I’ve used it at least 4 hours per day for the last 8 months. Thanks again Freddy and all you guys for this thread, kudos. November 6, 2009 at 9:28 am #175348malcolm159 Member[quote1257499476=bleron]

Hi See my thread dated Wed Aug 26 2009, 12:45PM its on page 21
Regards MalcolmNovember 15, 2009 at 12:49 pm #175414eightyape Memberdone most of the tweaks in your post freddy but i have run into a rather sticky problem, that has surfaced twice now and ive had to do a full reinstall to rectify it!
can you shed any light on what could be causing it?
here goes, it seems after the services modifications and a reboot to activate the changes/ deactivate unchecked services (as i say, its happened twice now and the services mods seem to be the culprit) i lose the ability to be able to “view available wireless networks” although the connections are seemingly fine- it connects automatically to a previously set up secure wireless network that is (set to automatic) no problems!, but this network and other wireless networks that i can pick up in my area do not show up in the connection manager!
 “no wireless networks in range”
what have i turned off that could be causing this , i followed your recommendations of leaving on the services that you state as either /or especially the ones relating to networking and also keeping on the TCP/netBIOS helper to no avail.
problem is that the networks are still not picked up even when i restore these services???!?!!
i am bamboozled and short of restarting windows and disabling the recommended services one by one -yawn i cant diagnose the problem – what have i done , do you know is driving me up the wall i tells you, otherwise thanks for all the speed mods done them all and this is the only issue ive found, got the boot time to a similar one to yours- havent timed it as i dont have the dominant geek gene.is it me or is gordon brown a smug, self satisfied, ignorant moron? November 19, 2009 at 2:03 pm #175415Villelj MemberHow i can delete blootooth-icon and recyclebin at the desktop?
Is there some program what can do this?
I scary to go regedit…Sorry my bad english November 19, 2009 at 7:47 pm #175372tonytb MemberFrom here you can download the last free version of X-Setup Pro, it is a brilliant tweaking program, which among many other things, allows you to remove desktop icons. Later versions are available if you pay for them. X-Setup Pro has a wide array of tweaks – USE WITH CAUTION – there are just a few which may have effects on some, particularly legacy, programs which may not be immediately apparent. It’s a good tool though. November 20, 2009 at 4:57 pm #175416Villelj MemberJust the right program! Thank very much! November 20, 2009 at 6:55 pm #175373tonytb MemberYou’re welcome Villelj 🙂 December 12, 2009 at 11:27 pm #175420sturm1909 Membersorry, i have not read all 24 pages in here. how many people have followed the bios advice? i’m just scared to screw something up by this. If you mean the parts of the guide which say to change the boot order and disable the LAN then yes this should be safe to do.Changing the boot order may speed up the boot process slightly, though with the latest BIOS it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference for me. I have also disabled the LAN before though I just leave it enabled now. December 12, 2009 at 11:53 pm #175233undo Member[quote1260661949=Alfihar]

What would the new bios do for me. I’m still on the original, purchased this time last year.December 13, 2009 at 12:12 am #175243Alfihar Participant[quote1260662772=undo]What would the new bios do for me. I’m still on the original, purchased this time last year.[/quote1260662772]
If you are running Windows XP then there is less of an incentive to update the BIOS as the newer versions fix some things if you are running Windows 7 or Linux such as backlight control and USB wake from sleep. There were also some fixes for things like the accuracy of the reported battery time remaining and an added option for the fan control.I’m not sure if there are any performance, power usage or fan operation improvements. There may have been, though unfortunately Samsung does not give many details regarding the BIOS updates. December 13, 2009 at 12:31 am #175421sturm1909 Memberthanks Alfihar! i just looked up the bios and recognized that it’s priority was on second place while on first place there was “usb” which wasn’t available anyway so i just left hdd on second spot. January 12, 2010 at 10:32 pm #175422flateric MemberWhat is the realistic battery life from an NC10? I ask as my new unit only gives 1hr26 and never charges to 100% instead just 97%! Believe I have a 6 cell battery.
