I am wondering which distribution works better on nc10, Ubuntu or Opensuse.
I used Ubuntu on my desktop PC. I like it.
But there are still some issue of Ubuntu 8.10 which can not be worked around. So what about 9.04?
If these issue have not fixed in 9.04, I would try Opensue.
So anybody try 9.04 on nc10?March 27, 2009 at 9:39 am #187809TCMuffinMemberYes – works a treat – finds all the hardware and includes OpenOffice 3 🙂
March 27, 2009 at 9:42 am #187800AlfiharParticipantDo the brightness controls work?
Have you found it to break much, my 9.04 install has broken a few times on me, mostly due to X.
March 27, 2009 at 9:46 am #187810TCMuffinMemberNo – I’ve found it pretty stable.
I don’t use the brightness controls. At 53 my eyes need all the brightness they can get !lol
March 27, 2009 at 1:10 pm #187814zhiyisunMemberawesome, I will download it and install on my nc10
March 27, 2009 at 6:42 pm #187818SiriusScaperMemberI think the brightness keys work, but I was using UNR 9.04.
March 28, 2009 at 11:05 pm #187802BoloMKXXVIMemberI loaded it on a usb drive and ran it on my Sammy. Yes brightness worked, but it did not get as bright as in Windows. Also, when the screen goes dark due to inactivity I had to readjust the brightness when I started using my netbook again. Sound control works fine. Wireless works well but shows signal strength lower than in windows. I am sure it is just the meter, the connection was solid. I did not test VGA out or bluetooth.

It works well, and you have the option of switching to the standard desktop if you get tired of the Netbook Remix Desktop.

March 30, 2009 at 6:38 am #187815zhiyisunMemberI found touch pad had some issues.
When I draw a circle, I will get a ellipse on the screen.March 31, 2009 at 11:57 am #187806JonBMemberGot the beta over the weekend and installed it. Nice fast boot time (though slower than XP and much slower than Presto). Glitchy. OSD for brightness failed to work after moving menubar to bottom of screen (but volume OSD always works). Cannot play DVDs, even with VLC player (that is seriously annoying). Slow, even with all desktop effects switched off – this compared to 8.10 and XP. Did not recognise my wireless broadband USB stick (surprising, but reasonably easy to fix). Did not remember my wireless network key (very annoying). Is unable to turn wireless card off / on (even more annoying, as you don’t want it sucking power when you are out of range). No other problems detected as yet, I have stopped using it for now (mainly because it is too sluggish) and will wait until the proper version comes out. I didn’t notice trackpad sensitivity issues overmuch.
March 31, 2009 at 12:00 pm #187811TCMuffinMemberThank you, JonB. I haven’t had chance to install it yet, so I will hold off until RTM.
April 1, 2009 at 2:04 pm #187804ktbMemberThe netbook remix looks gorgeous, though. Got to hand it to Ubuntu for great GUI.
I’m excited for the new release because it’ll mean a new release for Linux Mint, my current favorite. I haven’t played with Mint on the NC10 extensively yet. But I plan to put it on my N110 when I get it.
April 1, 2009 at 2:14 pm #187807JonBMemberMint’s a bit of a bugger because the start button navigation is tedious on the NC10 touchpad.
Also, the touchpad is more sensitive vertically on the Ubuntu 9.04 beta, so forget what I wrote about that. There is not so good graphics card performance for the i945 chipset we have (a fix is waiting in the wings) and I noticed that when playing full-screen standard def video files, there’s some tearing (all players – totem, mplayer, vlc suffer this).
April 3, 2009 at 2:39 pm #187816zhiyisunMemberI think I have to give up 9.04. It seems still not perfect now.
Opensuse 11.1 might be the best choice so far.April 3, 2009 at 7:00 pm #187808JonBMemberPersevere and dowload the updates. Fixes everything apart from the wifi on/off and as far as I can see no Linux driver supports this.
