Hi
My NC20 was bought from Amazon as a returned item, unfortunatly the original buyer registered it in his name (Jay) is there a way to change this to my name?
Andy
You can change the registered name and company on your current install using regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion
… and edit the keys RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization
The registry files are stored in WindowsSystem32Config folder:
DEFAULT HKEY_USERS.Default
SAM HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESam
SECURITY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESecurity
SOFTWARE HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftware
SYSTEM HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystem key and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
HKEY_CURRENT_USER is stored in NTUSER.DAT and USRCLASS.DAT under WindowsProfiles%UserName%
Haven’t figured how to access and edit files directly in the recovery partition, but I’m sure its possible.
Ok so I’ve been in to regedit and changed anything that had the previous owners name, I couldn’t find all the stuff above, after I got to current version I couldn’t find the Registered Owner etc. So I just opened everything and went through it all. Anyway its now got me as the registered owner so it worked. When going into task manager and looking at the processes it still has the old owner, is there a way to change those?
Also there’s a folder within Docs & settings that has the old users name, I’m unable to change the name of this folder. Anyone know how I can change it?
Andy
That would be a User account issue. Go to Control Panel –> User Accounts. Create another Computer administrator account in your name. Log into it, and delete the old one (in the other user’s name). For completion, you can also navigate to C:Documents And Settings and delete the folder with the unwanted user’s name.
Thanks, that worked a treat.
I didn’t need to delete the folder as when I deleted the old user account it also got deleted. I now have a folder with my name there.
Cheers
Andy
