Of course you can download apps to your nc10 – it’s just a compact pc.So, for movies, google and download VLC
for music Winamp
and for anything else, just ask here.
[/quote1262621200]hi v15,what do you use to get your dvd onto the hard drive? and what format are they saved in?
[/quote1262772516]hi
There are a plethora of guides here: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdbackup#6;33 with all different ways of doing this. I havent done it for a while (I have a huge backlog of films to watch), but there are plenty of completely free methods of doing so. Have a look through those guides and find one that’s free, and doesn’t seem to involve lots and lots of clicking, editing, and changing things – there are apps out there that are “one click”
The file will save as an avi file (usually, depending on the guide), which is to a move what an mp3 is to a song. you can get a good quality film into ~700MB.
Hope that helps

Memberwhat method did you use for creating the disk? I think there are two or three method, and one didnt work for me. I think (though am not sure) that the one that worked for me was using “unetbootin” software.
It may be worth trying a few different techniques.

MemberI don’t know anything much about satellite internet, but have a look on the little box/router/modem that connects to your pc from the satellite, and see if there’s any reference numbers etc.
Also, have a look at the cable that goes from the box/router/modem to your pc. Does it look like:

Memberhmmm, I think that that’s the most obvious solution! I can’t believe I didn’t think of it! lol. I currently use hibernate in linux, but I can’t remember why I did that over suspend (I know there was a reason, but for the life of me, I can’t remember!) lol.
I’m going to give that a go when I can be bothered to go get Samuel out of the car.
Thanks a lot!

Memberthat’s the one I was thinking of!
Cant imagine that would annoy you lol

MemberPersonally, I like Ubuntu’s Netbook Remix, which is the same as normal ubuntu, but with a more user friendly (and netbook friendly) GUI.
Why not download a couple and see what you think? most have “live” versions, so you dont need to install

MemberI’m interested in two things: speed of bootup and interface.
The problem I’ve had with windows and “normal” ubuntu is that the interface was lots of fiddly little menus (eg the windows start). I am currently using UNR 9.10, and I like the big icons, with the integrated menu system. I also like the fact that all the windows open full screen by default. This means there’s no moving screens around, and manually enlarging them (the netbook is too small to have many windows open simulaneously)
The one thing i think 9.10 is missing is the speed – it’s very good, but I want excellent! I like the idea of booting up pretty much instantly, and this is now my quest!
I use the netbook on the train a lot, when I don’t have internet, so I’m not sure how good moblin will be for me. I might give it a try…what are people’s experiences of the GUI and the speed?
It sounds like its faster but that people are confused by it.

Memberan alternative to messing about modding the insides is that you can get extremely small usb sticks – one that would only hang out by mm.
cant remember the name (and im on a train, so got a dodgy connection, so cant google very easily), but might be an easier/cheaper/more secure way of doing it…depends on the acceptability to you of having a small stick stick out.

MemberI’d also vote for a glasses cleaning cloth – if you dont have any, try just asking for a couple at your local opticians – that’s what I did when I was cleaning thermal paste off my cpu…I don’t even wear glasses.

MemberI’ve just had a look, and it looks quite similar to ubuntu (especially the netbook remix). Do you know what differences there are twix the two?
edit to add: I know its the same, and that the tweaks are to make it ee-pc specific, but wondering if theres anything there that makes it a clear choice over regular ubuntu.

Memberyou could use Trillian, a free msn replacement which connects to the msn network…not sure of the voice capabilities, but might work as a stop gap before proper msn is fixed.

Memberyou can just use XPLite on a “full install” to do the same. Whilst it’s definitely neater to get rid of such programs (and the foreign languages) from the disk before installation, you can remove them after they’ve been installed using XPLite.
The advantage of this is that you can do it progressively. So you remove a few things you’re sure you don’t want, and test. After a few weeks, remove a few more things then test etc. This way, you can quickly put back anything that goes wrong (though IIRC I managed to use it without any problems, and I’m no expert).
Definitely worth doing, as I bet you don’t use half the windows XP stuff.

Memberfixed network flakiness
I’ve been testing for a couple of days now, and it seems that the instructions at this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Device/AR5007 have worked to stabilise my network connection.V15
MemberI can’t imagine much else going than the HDD. Definitely worth a check, but again, I’d be surprised if it got damaged unless it was spinning at the time.
