Um, actually, if that is a screenshot then it looks like your drivers might be doing their job OK. It might point to a hardware problem, the screen cable being the first suspect perhaps, as it bends and folds each time the lid is moved.
I am guessing, maybe someone else here has had a similar issue and been able to fix it?
I was bored, waiting for an episode of Warehouse 13 to buffer, so I thought I would try for you.
There seem to be a lot of issues with all versions of WMP from what I can see. I was browsing WMP forums which I found by Googling the other day, you might find some answers ´out there´ somewhere. I am not sure if W7 Starter should be causing issues like this.

It’s not a bad forum, yup. There are forums for most things, there is a section which may help you in your quest for a case here.
Jez’s advice above is excellent. If you can boot into safe mode then you may even be able to do a system restore to a date before the virus was contracted. This should preserve all of your friend’s data files too.
As you say, you ‘should’ be able to do it. But as Trig points out, it is unlikely to be legal.
The Office might well have been pre-installed on the original laptop, like yours, and then been licenced for that PC, hence your dad not having any discs.
There are cheap ways to obtain Office legally, student licences etc. Or maybe you could try OpenOffice which is absolutely free 🙂

Just kidding :p the pic you uploaded looks fine to me. It might be worth trying an external monitor to see if it is a hardware or output issue. Either way a different driver or a replacement screen might be in order. I don’t know how easy it is to get 10.2″ screens though, with the norm now being 10.1″.
Now I have no use for WMP but I just set it up for the first time on my NC10 with Win 7 just to try a sample from avchdlips, and sorry to say this, but I had sound with mine. The mountain stream sample I D/Led is a .m2ts file.
I doubt anyone is suggesting that Isaac, just that some load faster than others, and some are set to run a scan at boot as default which will inevitably take quite a while. You might want to check the settings on the one you use.

I wouldn’t worry about it, as long as Skype works OK. There are other posts on the forums saying the same thing.
Thanks for the interesting report dino, pros, cons and comparisons in real life are always good to see.
