Viruses that mess with the BIOS are very real and nothing new. CIH dates back to 10 years ago.
[/quote1238527228]I just wanted to say that 10 years ago, when I was 14, me and my bestest buddy in the whole world fell out over the CIH virus. He inadvertantly infected my machine and I lost all of my Sim City 2000 saves. I never forgave him.
It’s not just computers that get hurt when a virus stikes.

Going off topic…… if and when Apple make a ‘netbook’ what will they call it I wonder……

As for quoting in general, I can honestly say that I tried to cover all your points, can you honestly say (with regard to my latest post) you did like wise with your latest post on this subject?
markhedder wrote:1) I don’t think so but don’t take my word for itNo, it’s not about what you think, I don’t care what you think and I won’t take your word for it (not trying to sound harsh here lol). Show me a Core2 11″ laptop that is 400$. Until you can do that, the only way to keep prices that low on such a small form factor is the Atom. That’s a fact, until you can prove otherwise, because evidence points to the fact that Core2 on small form-factors = thousands of $$$.
Mark I don’t believe it’s about what I think, however I am concerned with opinions like yours, what is your fixation with (as an example) price?
markhedder wrote:2) So there is obviously a market for such a compromised product.Yes there is a market, I even said so myself. The point I was making is that even adding one piece of “extra” hardware, such as a GPU or DVD drive, increases costs significantly.
I’m lost on your point here?
markhedder wrote:3) No Mark there not. However product development will not be held back for long by manufacturers and consumer “it’s only a Netbook†/ “then it wouldn’t be a Netbook†syndrome but not to worryActually they are. 11.1″ notebooks use the same chasis as 10″ netbooks, and the same keyboards and keyboard sizes too (evident in ASUS model). I’ve seen all three models that I’ve described right here in store side by side with all the netbooks on the market. The reason is because netbooks have some extra bezel room, which you can clearly see. 12.1″ inches are significantly bigger though. Like I said and I’ll repeat again, you are free to buy an 11″ notebook with a weaker Core2 for much more money, no one is stopping you. We buy netbooks because it’s cheaper (atleast I do anyways lol) and as jez has said before (and I’ve come to the same conclusion), you are practically doing the same tasks with an Atom than with a underpowered Core2, so it makes more sense to go the netbook route.
The ASUS is a bad example or a cheap shot at putting your point forward, or you are missing the points I’ve tried to (hopefully legitimately) make.
However I feel I must apologize to niteman1969 and to all (inc Mark to a degree) for the derailment of this thread, this was not my intention.

Yes there is nothing wrong with the quoting system. The way you used the quoting system is what sucked.

I made my point on my first post but I’ll do it again here. Your point was that “what we feel should be in a netbook” is a limiting factor and that if we didn’t have this idealization, they would be making Core2s. What I’m saying is no, we have Core2s on small laptops — those are 11″ mininotebooks. So the Atom, and whatever else you had in mind, is not what is limiting netbooks. You’re made it very clear that we would have these stats if they didn’t focus on Atoms — we do have these stats. Pick up a Lenovo U110, ASUS U2E etc. You are free to buy it. The downside is it costs a truck ton of money. Most people are not willing to pay this money – which is why we have netbooks!
3) The ASUS is a bad example or a cheap shot at putting your point forward, or you are missing the points I’ve tried to (hopefully legitimately) make.
Lenovo U110? ASUS U2E? Sony VAIO TT? You just dodged my point I just made by not saying anything lol. You’ve obviously never seen these in real life, they look exactly like a netbook and are thinner and lighter. The only difference is they cost a ton of money.
4) I could not have said better myself
Not for the same reason you think. They will improve on the Atom and it will get better — not that they will be putting Core2s on them.

MemberI’d be interested as to what hardware they will be running this service on. Some details on that might make this venture a little more believable.

I’m with Ukonline, yep it’s a static ip, the account is a fair few years old now, at the time usb modems were all that were distributed, it’s only relatively recently that wireless routers have become the thing.
[/quote1238342364]I assume you need a static IP for some specific reason? Until you change that IP address the attacks will keep coming!

Member[quote1238329646=The Walker]
I’m going to get on to my ISP and request a change of IP.. if they refuse then I’m changing service providers!
[/quote1238329646]So your ISP issues you with a static IP? What is your ISP?
Also, if your ISP is only providing you with a USB modem – they suck. Time to change!

The part that was getting warm was the bit under the LEDs on the front. I’m not sure what is under that part in regard to circuitry
[/quote1238244302]Thats near the RAM and CPU. Did the NC10 have this problem before you swapped the Wifi cards? Maybe try putting the Atheros card back in to eliminate the new Wifi card being the problem.

The 500GB Western Digital Blue is not recommended – seems to get quite hot, impact battery and also too noisy to be comfortable.[quote1238239809=Ali2k]
I’ve purchased the Western Digital 320GB Scorpio Blue Hard Drive, but have seen that there is a 500GB hard drive available. Also I think I have read on this forum somewhere a few people have upgraded to 500GB, just wanted to hear from them. If the hard drive is working fine ?
[/quote1238239809][/quote1238243310]
Depends which WD 500GB you go for. I believe the Scorpio Black (7200rpm) does indeed run hot, but the Scorpio Blue (5400rpm) is actually better on the battery and runs cooler than the Scorpio Blue 320 GB. Have a look at the 2.5″ HDD charts at Toms Hardware for some info on the above mentioned drives.

It doesn’t matter if it was osx or windows it was closed down from. I don’t know about the usb power, but I had no usb devices attached at the time. I will try with the battery removal/ re install at some point too
[/quote1238082889]Are there any lights on the bottom left still on after you have shut down the NC10? This sounds very strange. If the NC10 was in hibernation or standby overnight it would not deplete the battery as much as 30%. And if it was actually ‘on’ there would be more than 30% battery depleted.

MemberThe starter edition may be acceptable if it is included on dirt-cheap netbooks (say sub £200), but something with the capability of the new Ion chipset (maybe a dual-core Atom) deserves better.
