ParticipantLeopold Bloom – Welcome to the forum
We have a Logitech V470 Cordless Bluetooth Laser Notebook Mouse on one of our NC10’s and it performs well. I posted some thoughts on it here last year.
On the other NC10 we have a VX Nano with a tiny USB receiver dongle that when plugged in is so small so as you would not notice it’s presence and we leave it plugged in all the time. Of the two mice the VX Nano is probably the better of the two as it it very precise and smooth and has better glide action.
The hardest thing I have found is finding a mouse that fits well in the palm of the hand and the V470 fits that requirement the best for me.
Hope this helps

Participantjeetmistry – MS withdrew the offer so it does not work now as a year’s free trial.
You can get a free trial of Office 2010 at the MS site.
Hope this helps

You will not need the recovery disk if you are going to use the F4 at boot option as it will use the data in the Recovery Partition to re-install the complete system to the C: drive only.
It will not touch the D: drive when restoring but back up any useful data you may wish to keep to be on the safe side.
If you want to format D: afterwards, or before the restore, then that can be done but it is probably not necessary if it is checked out with malewarebytes and it proves clear of infection. From my experience most trojans etc. will normally only infect the system drive but this is not always the case of course and depends on the severity of the infection.
Hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

Hi,A newbie here with possibly an old question; however after scouring the archives I’m still uncertain of how to proceed. [/quote1271512378]Welcome to the forum
Quote:My wife’s NC10 was recently infected with a Trojan. Someone more ‘expert’ than me has removed it, but there seem to be a number of wrinkles in the machine since it came back to us. I reason the most effective way to solve the problem is to undertake a full ‘clean’ recovery, and put the machine back to its ‘out of the box’ condition.I understand that this can be done using Recovery III, however I instinctively feel that I may as well reinstall everything from the recovery discs I have (one blue/one lavender).
I have a number of questions on this that I’d appreciate some advice on.As I said I am keen to try and restore the machine to its factory condition by wiping everything from the HDD and effectively starting afresh (I will make backups of all the data before I start). I understand that using the Recovery III Restore feature effectively formats and restores the C Drive to factory condition; I am concerned ‘nasties’ may still be lurking on the D drive hence my desire to format the whole computer. So my questions are:
1. If I reinstall using the discs will it completely ‘wipe’ all existing data; i.e. format the the whole HDD (both C and D Drives) and thereby assure me of a ‘clean’ system?
You don’t have to use the Recovery Disc, press F4 at boot and choose the ‘Full Recovery’ option. This will wipe everything on the C: drive and re-install the complete system to the position where it was originally set up ‘out of the box’. Backup you data before doing this operation.
Quote:2. I believe from reading on this forum that in order to achieve a completely clean system I need to either format all the discs or overwrite every sector. I understand the Recovery III partition sits (hidden) on the D Drive…is there a problem with me formatting the D Drive…assuming that I can restore from the disks? The Recovery partition (6GB) is a hidden partition and is separate from the C: and D: partitions.
Quote:3. Will the partition size option be presented or does the recovery process not extend to giving that option? There is no option to re-size the partitions but you could use Easeus Partition Master to do this easily if so wished.
Quote:4. Will the ‘hidden’ recovery partition be reinstalled as part of this process or do I need to run Recovery III immediately after a (hopefully) successful reinstall? The Recovery partition does not get re-installed and there is no need to run SRSIII.
Quote:5. Presumably I boot from the ‘blue’ disc by connecting an optical drive and tapping F2 during the boot sequence and selecting the optical drive to boot from. I ask this because I notice that if I insert the blue disk in the optical drive whilst operating the machine ‘normally’ (i.e. already booted up and operating windows) the autorun software gives me the option to undertake a Standard or Quick installation. So do I actually have to boot from the disc (i.e. Power on / F2 / boot from optical drive) or can I just run the Standard installation under normal operating conditions?
6. Once the operating system is reinstalled, presumably I then insert the lavender disk and follow the instructions to reinstall all the software? If you choose the F4 at boot option then there is no need to go through this procedure.
Quote:Apologies if this seems obvious but whilst not a complete novice I’m not far behind! As I said my objective is to completely ‘clean’ install and format everything so at least I can be sure what I end up with is factory fresh and that there is nothing ‘lurking’ anywhere!Having said all that if you run malewarebytes on it you may not need to re-install the system and it will save you time.
Hope this helps

Participant[quote1271504476=Snappa]My anticipated usage is for field notetaking, holding the netbook on my left forearm, and typing with my right hand. Does anyone else do this ? Is it practicable ?[/quote1271504476]It is quite practical to hold the sammy on the forearm for note taking purposes whilst clutching the right hand hinge joint with your fingers. The left hand end will then nestle into the elbow joint and it seems quite a secure method of holding the sammy for the purposes you have in mind. To confirm that, it would be an idea to pop into a shop and try it out before purchasing, just to satisfy yourself.
Quote:Does anyone know if any of the suppliers will sell one of these Sammys with 2 GB of RAM, or will I have to install this myself (and have a surplus 1GB RAM module). Will the extra 1GB of RAM reduce the battery time very much ?Thanks.AFAIK very few suppliers will sell the sammy complete with upgraded ram but it is a simple exercise to change the ram yourself. I don’t think the extra 1GB of ram will make any difference to the battery time or if it does it will be so small as to be immeasurable in normal use.
Hope this helps

Which partition manager did you use. It sounds like you have Linux grub installed. You could try typing ‘rescue’ at the prompt and try to recover the situation with grub commands.
What partition did you create and are the original partitions intact ie. the recovery partition which contains your backup of the Windows system?
I assume F4 Full Restore did not function because the MBR has been changed by grub.
These threads may be of assistance.

Participantfkhan – Can you change the brightness settings in the Windows Mobility Centre? [Win key] + [X]
What Power Plan have you selected?

Participantsue – The mailbox folders are normally manually created but you can copy them from another pc if you wish.
You might have better luck by installing Windows Live Mail as this has replaced Outlook Express.
