ParticipantJust checking, have you restarted (turned it off/on) the router?
Alfihar
ParticipantWait so did you manage to successfully use that external usb optical drive to boot from the Windows XP disk and install XP?

I would suspect the software used to play the DVDs before blaming the external drive first TBH. That may explain the difference in operation with your other laptop.

Agreed, it seems like a codec issue to me. Try playing the DVD in VLC.
Also it shouldn’t matter which USB port(s) you use.Alfihar
ParticipantI wouldn’t bet on finding one easily, a way around it would be to cut and extend the webcam cable. So:

Participant[quote1250631524=jeepers01]unless we have all lost the plot! 🙂 :)[/quote1250631524]
Ok so I think I’ve lost the plot… I think a combination of the talk of BT and a headache completely derailed me. %-6So we are adding a WiFi dongle, most of them are quite large. Well the ones which can be opened up to attach some decent aerials anyway.
R.P.Infinity, that cable you posted. The small end is no good for use inside the netbook.
Though that tiny adapter may work without removing the USB connection and plugging it directly into the hub. The reception may be pretty poor though.Alfihar
ParticipantIs this mod to add BT (Bluetooth) or 3G/HSDPA, if it’s BT then it could fit as there are some very small dongles. 3G/HSDPA dongles tend to be a lot larger and probably wouldn’t fit with the external USB port intact.
Alfihar
ParticipantIf I were doing this, I would strip down both the hub and dongle, removing both the outer shell and connectors, then solder wires directly from the hub to the dongle.
With the full size external usb port and a dongle plugged into in directly it is likely not to fit, at-least not easily.

Participant[quote1250627430=R.P.Infinity]Once a hub is in, connected by internal usb, if i were to plug the webcam into one of the usb ports, using an adapter, would it work?[/quote1250627430]
Yes it will work. With those hubs you’ve shown you will most likely need to desolder (remove) the connectors. Also although the last hub you posted and the cable are meant to conenct to an internal connector, the type they use is for a desktop computers motherboard usb header which I don’t think is the same as the connector inside the netbook.
EDIT: Oh that second “hub” you posted, I don’t think it’s a hub at-all rather it’s a dual usb motherboard header to dual external usb ports. So it’s just an adapter.

ParticipantWell I think the ION LE is just a GeForce 9400M restricted to DirectX 9.
I wouldn’t expect there to be any difference as far as playing back Flash videos and general use.
However watching videos which use certain codecs (e.g. BlueRay) should allow HD to run well also gaming should improve over the Intel and Via systems.

Is Karmic easier to get up and running on an NC20 than Jaunty or Intrepid?
[/quote1250600862]
Much easier to install than Intrepid – specifically, I had no issues with the wireless adapter.[/quote1250602190]
Are you sure, I haven’t seen any reports on 9.10 and the VIA Chrome9 drivers. The NC20 is quite different from the NC10, with most of the issues being with the VIA graphics chipsets drivers.I would expect the installation to be similar to 9.04 where you need to manually install the drivers.
EDIT: After a quick search it appears that the drivers which come with 9.10 do mostly work out of the box. Though it seems like neither 3D acceleration or the openchrome drivers work. Though even with openchrome and 3D acceleration working it seems that it’s too slow to run Compiz or other 3D effects anyway.

Participant[quote1250465552=TCMuffin]No – the volume controls work, but not the brightness :([/quote1250465552]
Seems like it has the same issue as Fedora 11, can you try adding “nomodeset” as a kernel boot parameter. Probably easiest if you test it by adding it from the GRUB boot screen.
On a fresh Fedora 11 install this works however after updates it breaks X so you can’t login…Alfihar
ParticipantDo the brightness controls work?
And have they fixed the webcam issue yet?Alfihar
ParticipantHow are you checking the battery life?
The one which comes with Windows can be very inaccurate, and 5.4 hours doesn’t seem too bad for real world usage, depending on what you are doing.

ParticipantThere is some very brief information on this page, though only up to 07CA. As for whether it is worth updating, I prefer to stay up to date as the updated BIOS should fix various bugs. Though if it’s working fine for you there may not be any need, especially as BIOS updates are done at your own risk.
By the way if you do decide to update, you only need to download/install the latest version.

ParticipantThe speakers are not plugged in via USB. At-least as far as I’m aware.
There should be a mic port and a stereo speaker port by the 80H decoder port, neither of which are going to be of use for this. You may want to use the webcam USB connector rather than the Bluetooth one as I think it only provides 3V though I’m not certain about that. I know the webcam one should work as it’s the one used by the touch screen mod which comes with a USB hub to connect to it.
The USB hub will need at least 1 upstream port and 2 downstream ports, you will probably find it very difficult to find one with an internal connector, so the best bet is to buy a small external hub and disassemble it then solder the cables for the USB connection directly. Oh and remember to insulate any bare metal.
