Hi for a small machine, I would suggest you to install ubuntu 10.10. For brigthness issue and specific function keys look at voria ppa.
On my NF 310, I’ve installed Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome 3. It was perfect but slower than gnome 2.

I start to have the same problem with the S key then C, X,W. It seems to appear when the processor was hot. The problem can be solved by pressing several times and strongly the same key. So I opened my netbook, used a canned air to clean the keyboard. And finally I loosened the screws on the keyboard.
I’ve no problem for the past three days.
