MemberI have an N130 running Windows XP, and I’ve always had wifi problems, but I’d restart the connection, or reboot, or in rare cases just delete it and redo it. But today all these have failed (and it’s not my server, or ip, because my laptop running Windows 7, my ipod and iphone all connect with no problems). Apparently there’s a workaround which involves connecting, then going to the Wireless Zero Configuration service and stopping it. Then when I reboot I have to do the same thing all over again. Apart from the fact that it’s a pain to do this every time, I’ve given my netbook to my mum, and even if I write down detailed instructions, I can already foresee frantic phonecalls to me at work, complaining that ‘it’s not working’!
So, is it worth installing Windows 7? I only have 1GB RAM. Or should I try Ubuntu? I’m sure my mum will get used to it, eventually (translation: she’ll kill me. Oh yes.).

MemberWhat type of Wireless card is it? Does it have integrated bluetooth?
Try finding it in device manager, right-click on it and go to Properties. In the Power Management tab make sure something like “Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power” is not ticked. If it is that’s likely causing it to lose connectivity.
Unless it’s an XP driver issue I don’t see how switching to Windows 7 would help.

It’s a Realtek card, no bluetooth. I found an updated Realtek driver, and installed it – no change. Though today she used it and the wifi held out for an hour or so.
No, “Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power” isn’t ticked, either.
Someone on the specific Netbook model thread had the same problem and solved it by changing from XP home to XP professional. If the problem recurs I might try that first. Yesterday I was pretty much in a state of panic because the netbook wouldn’t hold a wifi connection for more than 5-10 minutes, even though it kept telling me it had a strong signal (LIES!).
Thanks for your help!

MemberHave you noticed if it’s better while charging or is it the same?
I presume LAN works if you plug in with a cable?
I had this problem before too and it’s very irritating. I guess you don’t want to try this unless it’s a last resort, but you could test the wireless card in another laptop to make sure it’s not a hardware problem.
