MemberGuys, its driving me mad. My wifi connection is intermittent at best since Monday. I have the latest drivers on the Atheros. I’ve un-installed it re-installed both by checking for hardware changes through Device Manager and also by restarting the machine and leave it pick it up automatically. I’ve re set up passwords settings and everything else. I’m at the end of my tether with it now to be honest. I have an Acer Atom 1 also and it has had uninterrupted and perfectly good reception from the same wifi router.
It goes to connect enter password as normal and it then attempt to acquire network and then it blinks on the connection window to automatic returnig to the acquire network and then keeps looping like this over and over. Then this morning, turned the NC20 on and low an behold it connects automatically. Please, please, for the love of Sweet Jebus himself, someone have an answer for me.
Would consider an upgrade to the Intel 5300 if I had to. The third antenna is the only thing that would put me off. Not looking for the increase in connectivity as such just a more stable or reliable Wifi connection. Thanks in advance

ParticipantI don’t have much advice regarding the Atheros card but, why does the 5300’s third antenna put you off?
You can just buy the cheap short aerial from OxfordTec and lie it inside the case.Running the Intel 5300 with just two aerials should work fine if you aren’t looking for maximum speed or range (need a tri-aerial wireless-n router as well for that).

MemberSo I would need to change my router if I wanted to use the third aerial? Am I correct in saying this. What if I just wanted to use the two existing aerials? Router need to be changed then? Thought the third aerial needed to be mounted through the Screen housing sorry my mistake, was the reason it was putting me off installing it. My bad.

ParticipantIf you want to run at the maximum 802.11n that the Intel 5300 is capable of which is 450 Mbps you need a router that has three aerials and works in the 5GHz frequency.
The card will work fine with pretty much any router, just not at the maximum speed. The third aerial should still help to improve the signal/range even if the router doesn’t support the maximum speed of the card.
Additionally one thing to note is that your wireless network will only run at the speed of the slowest device connected to it, and that the 5GHz frequency is not supported by many devices.
EDIT: Here’s a link to the Aerial at OxfordTec, it’s available on the US site as well. It may not give as great a reception as one mounted behind the display, but it works fine for me.

MemberCheers Alfihar. Anyone else maybe got a solution to my Atheros issues or is it looking like I’ll be butchering the NC20 for the 2nd time

MemberHi,
Did you manage to solve this problem with your NC20 and Wifi.
I experienced sometihng similar with the NC20 regurlarly dropping my WiFi connection. I have managed to solve but can’t remember exactly how but mine never loses connection now.
Mine wasn’t hardware related though but settings on the machine, it might be worth a test if you are still having problems with connection to pause or stop your firewall as a test. If this helps maybe need to play with your firewall settings.

MemberWill try it. Doesn’t seem to be as bad lately to be honest. Not necessarily not connecting but just not picking it up automatically on power up all the time. Intermittant at best.
