December 17, 2009 at 6:54 pm #198491jeepers01 Participantjsel – It would be worth trying to update the video driver first before the restore IMHO. btw: I shortened the long link in your post. Hope you don’t mind 🙂 December 20, 2009 at 10:32 pm #198476jsel Member[quote1261348257=jeepers01]

[/quote1261348257]I have tried to update the video driver but it keeps saying I already have the latest version. How can I do this manually? Btw thanks for shortening the link!! February 2, 2010 at 1:50 pm #198536skigolfer14 MemberHello, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread. My white screen of death had become a real issue. I would automatically get the white screen if I turned by brightness past 3 bars. Even at 1 and 2 bars it would go in and out. I could always get it to come back because I knew where to push. I had one month left on my warranty and did not have the time or patience to send my NC10 back to Texas. I followed the instructions here and I have not seen the white screen in two weeks. This leads me to believe that it is not a cable defect, it was the instillation of the cable that was faulty. Thanks again, see you out there. Jim February 2, 2010 at 8:07 pm #198492jeepers01 Participantskigolfer14 – Welcome to the forum Glad the ‘fix’ worked 🙂 February 25, 2010 at 8:29 am #198538Denali21 MemberHi Folks, My name is Brad and it has been 7 minutes since my last white screen of death. In the beginning it was mostly when I plugged into AC power…now however the WSOD is as common as a normal screen. Here is my problem (besides the fact I recommended this computer to 3 others, two of which experience the WSOD) I am currently traveling with my computer (Thailand and heading to Laos in a few days) and have no way to get warranty service even though I am still covered because I bought it in June 09. I have little mechanical aptitude..do I throw caution into the wind and open her up and fiddle around with the cable and see what happens..the white outs are intolerable so I am going to have to do something..do I trust a PC repair shop here in Asia?..help! Cheers, Brad February 25, 2010 at 2:16 pm #198467Elephant Member[quote1267107168=Denali21]

[/quote1267107168]Hi Brad, I actually lol’d at the first sentence of your post. Good stuff. As for your situation, I’m sympathetic. I fell into a similar situation while I was doing some extended traveling. However, I toughed it out for fear that my limited repair skills would lead to my doom. That being said, if it’s getting intolerable, you might what to read some of the tutorials in this thread, get yourself a good screwdriver, and dive in. From reading this thread, it seems that you need to make sure that the cable is securely attached to the LCD. I have not performed this repair myself, but might do so soon because I am having intermittent WSODs; but, then again, I’m not using my Sammy as frequently as I was before. Keep us updated on your situation. If I attempt the repair, I’ll be sure to take photos and post them. -Elephant February 25, 2010 at 4:06 pm #198515Laura_M MemberI had also swapped the hard drive for a bigger one, and then the “white screen” problem popped up. In my case, it was sometimes white, but often a flickering screen, especially around graphics. Pressing behind the screen sometimes cleared it up, so I expected it might be a connector problem. Following Outnumbered’s procedure was the fix for my N120. Normally these tiny connectors ‘click’ into place, but this one didn’t look like it’s designed to do so. That would probably make it too difficult to disconnect it without doing damage – thus the tapes. The tapes that hold the connector in place lose some of their adhesive strength when re-applying them, so I hope it lasts. If the connector comes loose again, I’ll try using fresh tapes, like clear packaging tape, and/or additional adhesives such as RTV. Thanks, Outnumbered for your detailed solution that works! March 11, 2010 at 10:12 am #198477jsel MemberI think I have worked out that my problem only arises when I have connected to an external (Samsung) monitor. I have been using the NC10 without a screen for the last few weeks and I haven’t had the problem. As soon as I plug it in to the screen today, the flickering comes back and I fear it is about to white out. Mind you it comes back fine after a quick hibernation. Mine has been back to Samsung for the cable ‘fix’ and now they are suggesting a complete software reinstall which I am resisting as it seems clear it is a hardware problem. Anyone else have the experience above as opposed to general white out? March 11, 2010 at 11:16 pm #198539janebal MemberThanks to everyone for the white screen thread. I took my NC10 back to Bentalls with white screen trouble and initially the guy wasn’t too keen to do anything. When I asked him to Google your forum he read all the comments and immediately boxed it up and sent it back to Samsung. It took 3 weeks and has just come back – LCD cable replaced -now fine. Thanks again everyone who contributed to this thread. March 12, 2010 at 12:12 am #198493jeepers01 Participantjanebal – Welcome to the forum Glad it all worked out well for you 🙂 March 17, 2010 at 2:02 pm #198521Jazzman MemberHello. After several months, the problem of white screen back. Therefore, I decided to repair.
As I have written in previous posts, the reason for the white screen is a cable connecting the motherboard to the screen.
I added a link to a photo showing the cause of a white screen. Improving the cable is not enough. To repair broken ground wire.
Currently, after repair, I am sure the quality of the repair. Unfortunately, the factory cable is made badly.
Buying a new cable is difficult, the price quite high.
Netbook is now fixed at 100% and I am sure that the problem of white screen will not come back.
However, it is evident factory defect.Extremely sorry for my poor English. March 17, 2010 at 5:30 pm #198494jeepers01 ParticipantJazzman – Thank you for posting details and pictures of your fix to the LCD harness. A very useful post 🙂 March 18, 2010 at 11:59 pm #198540legacydan MemberHi guys, i had this problem too on mine, i got it repaired once under warranty and it was good for about 6 months. then the problem returned, maybe a knock or drop it got in my back pack caused it to go again, basically i stripped the laptop apart, first trying to reseat the cable at the back of the lcd panel thinking that was the problem as encountered by other on here . I powered back up the laptop before sticking everything back together, but the problem was still there. you could see that the screen would flicker white when you moved the cable where it goes down into the casing onto the motherboard. i disconnected the lcd ribbon from the motherboard, and reseated it along with tightening, the 2 black wires(earths i presume) that screw on the motherboard. Powered it back up and no more, white screen. I put everything back together and all has been good now for the last week, badly made netbook, but gladly an easy fix March 19, 2010 at 12:02 am #198495jeepers01 Participantlegacydan – Welcome to the forum Thanks for posting details of your fix 🙂 March 22, 2010 at 4:03 pm #198537Brynhildr Memberafter 11 months of no problems, my screen goes white when I plug in the ac adaptor. so I just charge the battery when it’s off. I had no idea until I read this forum how many others have white issues. I’ll save the helpful instructions for taking it apart to tweak the lcd wire if it happens in other situations. funny, I have no problem tinkering with my pc, but the netbook intimidates me.
