Home › Forums › Samsung Netbook Forums › Samsung NC20 Forum › Via Nano 3000… Could It be a Simple "Drop-in" CPU Replacement & 15-20% Performance Gain for NC20?
If what this article mentioned is ture/accurate – “…Made using the same 65-nanometer process technology as earlier versions of the Nano, the Nano 3000 is modified for better performance and lower power consumption. Via estimates users will see a 15 percent to 20 percent gain in performance at the same level of power consumption, allowing hardware makers to increase the performance of existing Nano-based laptops, like Samsung Electronics’ NC20 and a version of Lenovo Group’s IdeaPad S12.”
NC20 users will likely have a simple, “drop in” CPU replacement for a 15~20% performance boost. Hummm, let’s see how much this CPU is going to cost… 🙂
Notice how it says “allowing hardware makers to increase the performance of existing Nano-based laptops”, the CPU won’t be a simple drop in replacement for users as it would be on a desktop computer with a socketed CPU. You would need the correct equipment to (de)solder the BGA underneath the processor.
Looking at the guts of the NC20 as revealed by this close-up, it seems to be a drop-in once the heat pipe/sink is removed; & hopefully the CPU is not soldered to the underside of the MOBO. (fingers crossed)

[/quote1255304466]Yes it does look like it is on a daughter board, but still may be soldered in, or on pins?
The Via Nano processors are designed to be soldered in place using a ball grid array. That picture shows the processor being directly attached to the motherboard with no socket (you wont see any pins on the other side of the motherboard either).
Should I open my NC20 to find out? (talking to myself) Nah, not going to do that, not at least until Nano 3000 shows up in the market… 😀
