MemberI recently had a virus on my netbook, I thought I had cleared it using AVG, (virus was scvhost.exe) when I restarted my netbook and picked to boot windows 7 from my dual boot menu the following appears:-
Error Code: 0xc0000225
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.I have no external cd drive and no copy of windows xp, so I’m stuck on what to do.
Can anyone help me please?Thanks

MemberWelcome to the forum Tin,
scvhost.exe is not always a virus, just a common process name that a virus might disguise itself as. If you deleted all instances of it from your system then that may be your problem.
An F4 at boot might be the only way to restore your system, but you will lose all of your programs and data. Unless someone else has some other insight into this.
I take it you cannot boot to XP either?

MemberTry hitting F8 before the Windows screen comes up but after the BIOS splash screen. Then select Safe mode from the options, then from there you should be able to do a system restore.

MemberI didn’t delete the file, I left it in place. Cannot boot either xp or 7. F4 does not work, it says ‘invalid recovery area.’ I’ve tried tapping F8 with no luck

Membersounds like something corrupted your MBR. If you have your windows 7 installation disk, you can run the installer to try and fix it.
Let the installer run until it gets to the welcome screen. Then press Shift + F10 to open up a command prompt window. Then type “fixboot” and hit enter, and then type “fixmbr” and hit enter.
If it asks for a disk, it needs “c:” and enter.
No guarentee that will fix it, but its one extra thing that could help 🙂

MemberSorry for the double post, but its either the MBR being damaged, or its the driver for the harddrive or other critical device. If its to do with the driver, then your only hope is to reinstall the OS’s afresh.
Hopefully it’s one of those two, preferably the first one, as thats the easiest. Ultimately, if it isnt either, then it could be a hardware failure :S

ParticipantTin – Welcome to the forum
Is the hdd spinning up? Check it is still recognised and displayed in the bios to try and determine if it is a hard disk failure.
As AMDkilla has said this looks like a problem with the MBR which can be fixed as per instructions in this thread using the AdminTool_USB software.
Recovery Partition rebuild with F4 key enable
However as you have a dual boot system (and you have lost your XP disk) XP is likely to be on the C: drive and Win 7 on the D: drive.
Fixing the MBR will hopefully gain access to the XP installation but access to Win 7 will most likely be lost. You could then re-install Win 7 from a bootable usb thumb drive, made on another PC from the Win 7 disk you have, onto the D: drive.
Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

Memberjust a quick question;-
if i do a clean install of windows 7 via the usb key, will it solve the original problem that i was having?January 9, 2010 at 6:44 pm #208952jeepers01

[/quote1263062585]if you had Win 7 installed on the D: drive and you re-install Win 7 to the D: drive then the MBR will be repaired so it will boot into Win 7. Whether it recognises the existing XP installation on C: is a bit of a gamble. It depends on if there is any damage to the XP installation. If it does see it then you should be back to the dual boot screen which you no doubt had before.
So the answer to you question is probably yes so long as Win 7 can detect the existing XP installation on the C: drive.
Hope this helps, but sorry can’t give any guarantees.

MemberHi, Just thought I should give a quick update of my situation.
I ended up wiping the HDD, and reloading windows xp via usb stick. From there I loaded windows 7 and using a program call ‘Driver Genius’ I downloaded all the drivers that i needed.
Just want to say a big thanks for the people who helped me out, without them I would still be sitting here with no netbook.
Cheers
