I just bought an NC10 on ebay along with a 320gb WD Scorpio Black HD and 2GB of RAM.
Can someone tell me how I can keep the Recovery Partition when I upgrade the 160gb stock hard drive? Can I use WD’s DataLifeguard tools to upgrade the hard drive?
Thanks!
Nate
Clone the hard drive in there now, then install the new hard drive and restore the clone. You can then resize the main parition sizes to mirror the left over drive space.
You should be safe doing it as you have no reason to format the normal drive.
Something like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image should work fine.
These take 1:1 copies of the drive for restoring so the partition table will be copied over as well.
You can also make a restore DVD from the Samsung recovery software (assuming you have an external burner) and use that to put a working recovery partition back on the drive.
FWIW, if I was going to tear my NC10 apart and replace the hard drive, I probably wouldn’t bother putting the recovery partition back on there.
Thanks for the quick replies. I also ordered a Samsung External DVD drive for this procedure, however I am wondering if I should cancel my order as it might not be neccessary? Can I restore from the image or restore disk by copying it to a usb thumb drive?
IIRC, it only makes a restore DVD to a DVD burner. You can’t make a working (as in “push F4 at startup”) recovery partition without it or a completely cloned drive. Make sure you search the forum for more information about the Samsung recovery software, as I haven’t actually used it myself.
I use one of these in conjunction with Acronis to clone 2.5 inch drives, it’s a hell of a lot quicker than using DVDs;
