MemberHi guys,
I recently bought a NC110 and I’d like to install a Linux distro but I’m not able to boot on my USB thumb.
It’s the first time I’m trying to install Linux on a netbook so maybe I’m doing something wrong. I tried first with Arch Linux following this tutorial: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Putting_installation_media_on_a_USB_key (the « dd » & UNetBootin way), then with Fedora following this tutorial: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_and_use_Live_USB and finally Ubuntu directly with UNetBooting.
Each time, when I’m in the BIOS menu, I’ve « N/A » on the USB HDD line, like if the USB thumb had nothing bootable on it, I put it in the first position anyway but nothing happens. In the other boot menu (activated with ESC), I’ve only the HDD entry. I’ve also tested each time on another computer and it works like a charm, so I guess it’s not a problem with the USB thumb or the image itself.
I’ve seen a few people able to install Linux this way, so am I missing something ? Is there another way to do it ?

MemberHi elixis,
Here is a hint: on the NC10, after having set the proper boot priority order in BIOS, I found that I could only boot on one of the three USB ports (the first one on the left).
Maybe something similar happens on the NC110.Hope you solve your problem.

Participantelixis – Welcome to the forum
Are you booting the machine with the stick present, then entering the bios to set USB-HDD to the highest priority?
Hope this helps

Participantquietdawn – Welcome to the forum
I too read somewhere a long time ago that the bootable usb port on the NC10 was believed to be the right hand one.
However after testing I found this not to be conclusively the case. Details hereHope this helps

Member@quietdawm & jeepers01 – Thx for your replies, but still nothing 🙁

Yep, I plug in the USB stick, start the netbook, hit F2, enter the BOOT menu, set USB-HDD entry to the highest priority (there is nothing on the line, just « N/A »), then hit F10 (for « Save & Exit »), and it boot directly on the HDD, I did the same process with the 3 USB ports…

Also it may possibly be something that is fixed by a bios update
I trust data sticks work normally in the ports?Hope this helps

MemberI have only one data stick right now, but yes, I tested it empty… Actually, the last time I installed a Linux distro on the stick, it was on the netbook with Win7, I’ve been able to format it and use UNetBootin successfully, so I don’t think there is a problem between the USB stick and the netbook (at least, after it booted on Win7)
Also it may possibly be something that is fixed by a bios update
I guess that would be a bad news for me ?

Participantelixis – What I meant was, using another non bootable stick might allow the USB-HDD to be recognised and then selected with highest priority.
Hope this helps

MemberOk, so I’ll try to find another USB stick and try this way…

MemberI don’t think the NC110 BIOS is too different from the N150+.
I put my Linux Mint USB itno a USB port, rebooted to BIOS and the stick was listed as USB Generic Flash Drive…
Possibly you assumed that USB HDD was the obvious choice…Please try going into BIOS without USB in place, NOTE what is there, put USB IN, reboot back to BIOS and see what has changed..
The ‘new line’ should be the Bootable USB stickHope this is helpful…

Participantelixis – This is the bios boot screen from the NC10 which may well be different to the NC110?
Do you have any different options available?
Worth checking that it is not excluded from the boot order.
The 4GB SanDisk stick is only recognised as USB HDD. I remember a while back this was discussed on the forum and the more obvious USB KEY setting does not work for some reason.
The secret to getting it reconised is to boot to [F2] with the stick present as stated in the above posts.Hope this helps

Membersammyone & jeepers01 – That’s what I get (with the stick present):

That could be a problem with the USB stick but it works on my other computer, anyway, I’ll buy a new one tomorrow and test with it… if it’s still doesn’t work, I think I’ll have to find another way :
Thx guys for your answers, I appreciate it.

MemberInteresting !
My Bios shows as ‘Active’ components, the HDD (which is AHCI !) – My Vodafone Dongle (USB CD) and USB HDD (Generic USB Flash Drive) which is the bootable Linux USB I use…Unfortunately I cannot upload things to the SammyNetbook website else I’d have attached my own screen shot
I cannot even use my own photo for an Avatar, it will not upload (a PM please, if you know what I’m doing wrong, Jeepers Thanks)November 1, 2011 at 11:28 am #220628jeepers01

AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) is available on more recent chipsets and is an implementation/enhancement of SATA (Serial ATA)
Hope this helps

Participantelixis – Does it boot on your other pc? and I wonder what it reports in the bios screen.
Hope this helps
