MemberI will be taking a two week trip to the Scottish Highlands in august, we’ll be staying in a cottage in a small village close to Fort Augustus / Loch Ness. We will tour the area of Fort William and Inverness as well.
Does anyone know if there are any WiFi hotspots around in Scotland, at supermarkets hotels etc? Google doesn’t turn up with much. If someone can point me in the right direction in the web I would be very grateful.
I also have a HSPDA dongle but the roaming costs are ridicilous (10 euros – 1 Mb traffic) so I want to avoid using that. But I don’t think I can manage two whole weeks without getting online. I’m addicted, I know 🙂

MemberYou can get free wifi at McDonalds in the UK. Hey, you will be in Scotland after all (groan…!). Otherwise I don’t know the best way to locate hot spots, I have a 3G modem so don’t use them myself.
I think pubs in the Wetherspoons chain also offer it for free, and many hotels are starting to but some still charge quite high rates :(. If you are lucky you will find a pub or a cafe that will offer the service – probably in exchange for buying a coffee :). Sometimes you just have to pop in and ask them.
Remember to share some photos of Sammy’s trip to Scotland :):)!

Participantsjonnie9999 i don’t know about the availablility of wireless in Scotland but I would agree with Jez’s advice. Perhaps a call to the local Scottish Tourist office in Fort Augustus, if there is one, may provide some local wireless availability information.
I think you may be better off with 2G/3G/hsdpa, but you will need to check operator coverage in the areas you intend to visit. You will probably only get 2G speeds though (O2 coverage for Fort Augustus is 2G). Consider carriers such as O2, Three and Vodaphone as they all sell ‘pay and go’ usb modems for approx £30 to £40 and extra 1Gb data for around £15 for a month.
Another alternative if your existing dongle is unlocked is to try and use an O2 iPhone 3G sim with free internet which you can buy on ebay for a few pounds only
If it turns out there is no coverage where you are going and if the cottage has a phone, then there is always 56k dialup (shudder) 🙂
Hope this helps
ps don’t forget to post the Loch Ness monster piccies here first 🙂

Memberyou could, and this is illegal, just drive round and find an open wireless network. You will find one of that I certain. Just don’t get caught 😀

MemberHehe good points made here. My HSPDA dongle is not unlocked, and I’m gonna keep it that way. I got it from my boss and he’s paying the bill. Last year I went to Italy and used it all the time. After I started work again my boss called me to say I spent 400 euros on HSPDA. Not a big problem, but he kindly asked me not to use it abroad anymore 😛
I will check out McD and the pubs. Otherwise some good old war driving might be the solution yeah. Will post pics when I get back, promise!

Have a great vacation, Scotland is beautiful.

MemberHmm good point about driving on the wrong side of the road 😉
I have a friend living in Scotland and I’ve been there before. The Scottish landscape never bores me. And I’ve picked up a taste for single malt whisky as well. One of the drawbacks is that when I speak English, I sometimes use Scottish slang. My buddy is so proud of me 🙂
Still have to wait until the end of August. Before that I have planned a wee trip to the Turkish Riviera which is in two weeks time. Quite different but nice as well. So the first photo I will send in, will be at some sunny beach with my NC20!
