MemberI should be grateful for advice as to the functionality of the sleep mode on my NC10 and carrying it whilst in sleep mode inside a laptop case.
Leaving the machine in sleep mode would be very useful, especially whilst moving through airport security, i.e. it would save time and grief if the machine was already powered up ready for the usual checks by security.
The Samsung User Guide, on page 13, recommends that you shut the computer down properly before moving it, which suggests that sleep mode is not intended for transportation.

Participantfranito – Welcome to the forum
When put in sleep mode it will automatically go into hibernate mode after 15 minutes depending on your settings. Since everything is then shut down I would believe it to be similar to a full shutdown. The problem is if the power button is pressed accidentally when the sammy is in a carry bag with the lid slightly open it will restart and could then overheat due to the lack of adequate ventilation. This is what Samsung are probably getting at in the manual.
Hope this helps

Memberfranito, first off, welcome to the forum. Secondly, excuse my ignorance, but I have not had to turn on my laptop/netbook when going through airport security. It is required that it be separate from other items and “in the open”. Is this a requirement of some but not all countries? Thanks.
On further thought, to prevent the possibility of the lid opening slightly while the netbook is being transported in sleep mode and the power button being activated, invest in a heavy-duty elastic band that will encircle the netbook yet could readily be removed if indeed the netbook has to be opened for inspection and powered on from the sleep mode. Once through security you could power off the computer. Hopefully, the preceding will cover the scenario alluded to by jeepers01.

MemberHibernate mode is excellent. (Press shutdown in XP then hold shift to reveal the option) This is a completely powered down state in which the contents of the RAM is stored on the hard drive. Its effectively the same as switching the thing off and uses no power. The only difference being that when you power up again you are where you left off with all your applications and documents open. (Note: Games will hang in this situation)

MemberThe NC10 closes quite firmly and positively so it’s hard to see how, if a transported in a carry bag, it could open itself AND activate the ON button.
I fly in excess of 40 times p/a and habitually keep mine in sleep mode (not hibernate) and can report zero spurious start up incidents and also zero problems at security checks.
Most airport seem happy just to see it whilst in Amsterdam you are required to open the lid, God knows why, and in Munich it used to be obligatory to actually turn it on and they even had a selection of foreign adapters and some mains leads to counter arguments that the battery was flat so couldn’t be without mains power.
Travelling on helicopters in the UK North Sea one is still required to turn it on but it is easily sidestepped by removing the battery.
I don’t get the ‘switch it on’ mentality. If I’m clever enough to hide a slab of semtex inside it surely I’m clever clever enough to ensure it doesn’t go BANG when some minimum wage twit asks me to press the ON button, especially when I know I’m going to be asked to !

MemberKiNel, thanks for the info. I especially appreciate the reference to mwt. It’s actually their clueless bosses that are to blame!! Thanks again.
