I am now able to see the @ symbol when I type it – but only if I press ‘Shift-2’.

As jeepers says, that sounds as if you have UK spec NC10 and your keyboard language is US. To check this:
*Select Start > Control Panel > Region and Language.
*Select the ‘Keyboards and Languages’ tab.
*Select the ‘Change keyboards…’ button.
*Ensure the ‘Default input language’ is ‘English (United Kingdom) – United Kingdom’
*Click on the ‘OK’ button to close the ‘Change keyboards…’ window.
*Select the ‘Location’ tab and ensure that the ‘Current location:’ is ‘United Kingdom’.
The above description is for a Windows 7 computer, but the principle will be the same for any Windows OS.
Hope that helps
[EDIT] Ooooops – too late – and I was only away from civilisation (i.e. mobile phone signal) for 24 hours at Ivy Cottage at the Walnut Tree in Llanddewi Skirrid.
