MemberHi,
I’ve just bought a NC110 and it’s come preloaded with Win 7 starter, and accompanied with a System Recovery Media CD.
I would like to install Mint but my question is should I completely wipe the hard drive, and if so would I have the option of reinstalling windows 7 starter again in the future if anything were to go wrong, or should I dual boot it just to be safe, in which case will it make the computer slow? I’ve upgraded to 2gb RAM.
Thanks

MemberYou can use a program called WUBI to Install various flavours of Ubuntu on a Netbook/computer.
It’s advantage is that you install and later, Uninstall the program thru’ Programs and Features leaving the Windows System intact… and making the netbook easier to sell.
If you install Linux, it will overwrite the Hard drive MBR, making it difficult (but not impossible) to re-install the original OS.
Using Mint, in particular, there is a (Windows) program called Mint4Win.exe, does a similar job to WUBI However for versions above V 11 you need to see this page…

MemberIf you don’t mind getting adventurous i highly reccomend giving arch linux a try. You start with just a base system and a command line and add whatever you need from there. It’s not as hard as it looks and is actually almost foolproof if you follow the beginners guide to a tea. Had it open on my ps3 browser with a wired connection and it couldn’t be simpler. If all else fails worst case scenario is that you install ubuntu or something on it. Use xubuntu though since unity sucks. But with linux my netbook went from just a novelty machine to my main machine with an external mouse/keyboard etc. Can’t reccomend linux enough for a netbook. You don’t really have anything to lose do you? Worst that will happen is you go back to windows. I don’t really reccomend mint though. Sure it’s super easy to get everything setup but it defaults to mate or cinnamon. Mate is gnome2 rebranded and cinnamon is gnome3 made to look like gnome2. If you want to see something truly amazing xfce or openbox ftw.
