How can I turn this annoying popup off?
Uninstall it 😕
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Thank you. Never would have thought of looking there.
I see something called “Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable”. What is that?
Those are the files you need to run programs compiled with Visual C++ 2005. They’re only loaded when a program needs them. You should leave it alone.
Ok. Thank you. I remember seeing a popup once referring to Visual C++. Kind of made me nervous. Never seen that on any of my computers before. Is that something that pertains to netbooks only? I’ve never seen that on any of my other computers running XP.
It’s not a netbook thing. It’s just that you probably haven’t installed a program on your other machines that was built with Visual C++ 2005. :)
(Also, it’d have to use one of the standard libraries. You might be able to write a pure .NET app in Visual C++ 2005 that wouldn’t need those libraries. I’m no .NET expert.)
Its similar to the Visual Basic 6.0: Run-Time Redistribution Pack (latest being vbrun60sp6.exe) Anything labeled “Microsoft” is always easy to look up at microsoft.com– its function may not be understandable, but you can confirm it’s legitimate software from Microsoft.

Then, I wonder what Samsung has installed on my NC-10 that uses Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable? The only thing I’ve installed that I don’t have on my other machines, and I will most likely uninstall, is Irfanview.
C ++ is all foreign to me.
Samsung installs a number of utilities on their machines, and I have no idea what Irfanview is developed with. (Good program though.)
I guess if you wanted you could uninstall the redistributable, reboot, and start running applications to see which one(s) give you an error. I don’t think it’s that important, but whatever floats your boat. :)
