Hello All
I’ve had my NC10 for maybe six months now.
In the past week or so, I’ve noticed that once a day (with maybe 2 – 3 hrs use per day on average), the NC10 ‘beeps’ and then there is a mechanical clunking noise (loud enough for me to hear over the TV when the TV’s at normal volume).
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Does anyone have an idea what this may be? And is it something I should be concerned about?
I bought the NC10 in the UK earlier this year but I am now in New Zealand for the next 10.5 months or so…hoping it may be covered by some international warranty!
There are only two moving parts in the NC10, the fan and the hard disk. From your description of the noise it sounds more likely to be the disk, so next time it happens, try to see if the noise coincides with the disk activity LED on the front panel.
The fan would be more likely to make a high frequency clicking sound.
Whatever the cause, make sure you back up all your important files to an external disk or stick – just in case the worst happens!
Edit: On re-reading your post, it may be a temperature related problem if it mainly occurs after a couple of hours use. In this case, the fan is the more likely culprit. Make sure the airvents underneath the NC10 aren’t being blocked by softfurnishings etc.. My friend’s teenage daughter always uses hers on the bed and it used to overeheat regularly until I suggested she placed it it on a tray or something similar, rather than on the quilt, which very efficiently blocked all the vents!.
