MemberA friend has just returned her Sammy Netbook (don’t know the model) because it was.. ” too slow to start up”.
It got me thinking and I timed the start up time of my Sammy N110 with 2GB memory and Win 7 HP. From button push to Welcome screen was 5 mins and from Welcome Screen to useable was another 1 min. A 6 mins start up! I followed this with a System Mechanic analysis and repair but there was no difference in the start up speed. Is 6 mins normal?Ted

MemberSomething very wrong. I have an NC10. When I had XP, 1GB and the stock Western Digital hard drive it took about 40-50 seconds from pressing start to a workable desktop. Now I have Win7 HP, 2 GB and an Intel X25V SSD and it takes less than 30.
For starters go into MSCONFIG and untick all that you do not need on startup. Others will have more suggestions I’m sure for something that is clearly not right.

MemberHi Ted,
As 8sutton suggests, try disabling programs until the speed improves. If you are still using the Mcaffee Antivirus that might be causing some delay in particular.
Mine loads Win 7 Ultimate quickly enough, I am always doing something else so never time it, but it most certainly is not 5 – 6 minutes.

MemberHI 8sutton and Tony, thanks for your responses and suggestions. I have AVG controlling my anti-virus so I uninstalled McAfee right at the start.
I burrowed into msconfig and discovered only a few programmes were starting up. I disabled some and am now down to about three minutes start up. I’ll live with this for the time being and may tackle it again and disable some more later. Thanks again.Ted

MemberJust to say a start up time of 6 min’s sounds very strange – I have had the NC 10 and now have the N120, I have never experienced more than 1 min of start up time, usually less, with XP or now 7, without any tweaks of start up programs and with McAfee. I often hear people claiming problems of the later slowing down the system, but have never experienced it myself. I recently read a test of 11 antivirus programs which appeared to be very thorough, and Mcafee got 4th best start-up time, 9 seconds, with AVG (the best) getting 4 seconds. Also McAfee used only 45 MB RAM, the 2nd best result after Aviva with 40 MB. I have no affiliation with the company, I was for many years a loyal Norton user, but found their software getting ever heavier, and have never regretted shifting to McAfee. Sorry to go against the general advice to uninstall McAfee. Hope you’ll someway find a solution – 6 or even 3 minutes would certainly drive me mad!

MemberI agree that this sounds longer than expected, my NC10 (2gb and XP) takes about 40 secs from cold.
ccleaner has some options to review what’s going on at boot time.
