MemberYe i did, thanks jay. i rang argos head office and they said that i should have been informed that i was receiveing a “replacement model”? She said that i should bring the nc10 back, due to false adverisment.
It states on my receipt that i am excempt from the 30-day money-back guarantee – so i’ll keep ye’s informed.
P.S. I’d still like to hear what kind of battery time other people are getting from their 3cell 2200mAh battery (and what i can expect from the 3rd-party 4800mAh battery i ordered from ebay). Ok, i’ll shut up now…

MemberI don’t think you have a leg to stand on as far as the battery is concerned, I’m talking about the ‘free broadband’.
Mine runs around two hours, surfing on low brightness with bluetooth off.

MemberYep, that’s the problem – battery shows 2200mAh 🙁 Really fed up now. When I bought it from Comet, it clearly stated on the sign that I could get 8+ hours battery life. Can they get away with this?

[/quote1251566637]If the sign was up in the shop that’s definitely worth arguing with the manger over.

If you took a photo of the sign with your mobile you’d have a strong case 😕Call me a cynic, but I always record everything with my camera phone

ParticipantThere’s probably some small print on the sign, or it says something like up to 8+ hours battery life. Just like with ISP’s where you can get an, up to 8MB* connection.
* actual speeds may be considerably lower

The SMART battery calibration will use up a complete charge cycle, this isn’t really that bad.Can you try BattStat and check how many Watts your netbook is using while idle.
Around 10W to 11W seems not too bad if there hasn’t been any optimisations, with most things active (WiFi, Bluetooth, moderate brightness). That should probably give around 4:30 – 5 hours worth.
[/quote1251593178]How do I enter BIOS?
The bootup time is lightening fast and I am unable to detect what keys to press to interrupt bootup and enter BIOS.
Once in BIOS, what steps should be taken to arrive at ‘SMART’?
What is it about this configuration that is raising concerns?
I too have poor battery life but confirmed I do have a 5200mAh battery.
How should a new battery behave ?
When running BattStat, what is the best / ideal ‘scheme’ to set while performing this test?
And, (dumb question) – I assume I need to have AC disconnected and battery charged at 100% before I commence this BattStat test?
How long should I run the test for?

You can enter the BIOS by holding down the F2 button when you start up.[quote1251626423=Byte]Once in BIOS, what steps should be taken to arrive at ‘SMART’?[/quote1251626423]
Once in the BIOS you need to press thekey once to get to the Boot tab, then press the [down] key until “Smart battery Calibration” is highlighted. You can then start it by pressing [Enter].[quote1251626423=Byte]What is it about this configuration that is raising concerns?

I would expect at-least 4h30 to 5h battery life, however this may not be the fault of the battery. Instead it can be caused if you have some program running in the background constantly, maybe a power hungry anti-virus scanner, virus or some other piece of software.[quote1251626423=Byte]When running BattStat, what is the best / ideal ‘scheme’ to set while performing this test?

With BattStat you can see how many Watts the computer is using, you can try running the programs you normally use and see what the reading is. Or you can start up the computer, open up Battstat and let it settle for a while, which should tell you what the machine is idling at.And yes you would need the AC disconnected, though you don’t need to charge the battery up to 100% for this.

Membermany thanks alfihar.
started battstatt 5 hours ago and it says it still has around 1 hour remaining. I have let this netbook idle all this time and put in a dark place where no-one can touch it. I just want to see what the battery can give at it’s best (idle and no programs running)…I’ll post the final hour life upon completion of test.
Can you shed some light on ‘SMART’ calibration and why this option should be selected?

ParticipantYou don’t need BattStat to test how long the battery lasts, not that it should really matter much as far as your test goes.
As for the Smart Battery Calibration, as far as I know the battery keeps track of how long it has remaining until the battery is empty. If you never run the battery down fully this can become inaccurate which will give you incorrect readings for the running time and possibly the percentage remaining. I don’t think it will actually affect the running time much though.
I wouldn’t bother running the Smart Battery Calibration if you are getting reasonable battery life. If you charge the battery up fully and then let it run down to 0% I think you are doing the equivalent of the calibration anyway.
If you get 6 hours at idle that isn’t bad, the battery life will vary depending on whether the Bluetooth, WiFi, webcam are switched on, backlight brightness and running programs (including ones running in the background). This is where BattStat can be useful as it give you an indication of whether the Wattage is unusually high at idle or during certain tasks.

Memberi got 6 hours. but, why is samsung advertising at 7 hours?
and, is the battery life (in hours) published as an idle time or is this battery life published with normal usage?

MemberIt is all a bit of hype, but all manufacturers do it. The same as car makes stating their mpg, nobody knows how these figures are achieved, the manufacturer will claim ‘up to’ then the shop will advertise this as an actual figure.
If you read reviews of any netbook the reviewer will generally state the maker’s claim and also their experience, which is often two thirds or even half what is claimed.
There are so many variables in measuring battery life that the figures are used just as a guide. Think of the ‘whiter than white’ washing powder adverts.

Memberyeah check its not the 3 cell battery , running it with the wifi off , the backlight on 3 bars and the sound muted gives me nearly four hours , but where is the fun in that , I get two hours with wifi on and screen on full brightness , gonna have to get me one of those 9 cell batterys soon , sick of plugging this thing in to charge it

Hmm maybe its an Argos thing cos my one was from there and has a 2200mAH battery which im guessing is a 3 cell. Could you PM me if you get anywhere with a replacement as i kind of need mine and dont really want to have to take it back and go for a while without a computer again…
Bloody false advertising!!September 19, 2009 at 1:07 pm #196077BOARDBOY
MemberdannyAtown how did you get on with Argos? I sent them an e-mail about my three cell and the reply was the usual brush off. The customer service team said the had checked the catalogue and they do not advertise what battery it comes with, so it wasn’t misleading!. I replied to them saying that was my point they should advertise what battery it comes with. Over a week now and still no reply. Great customer service!
