the chipset supports 4gb but i read its 2x2GB ie 2gb max in one SO-DIMM

I refer the honourable lady/gentleman to the answer I gave yesterday:

From http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/chipsets/v-series/vx800/Quote:support for up to 4GB of DDR2 system memory.[/quote1242846032]
That’s the chipset not the motherboard. The motherboard has only one RAM slot, i.e. it will allow a maximum RAM of 2 GB.If the motherboard had two RAM slots then you could take advantage of the chipset’s maximum RAM of 4GB 🙂

Sorry TCMuffin but I don’t understand your point. There are also 4 GB DDR2 RAM modules… just one example from Kingston: http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/PartsInfo.asp?root=us&LinkBack=http://www.kingston.com&ktcpartno=KTT667D2/4G

Even if you could install a 4 GB RAM chip in a NC20, why would you want to install a £250 RAM chip in a netbook which only costs about £375 😕[img]http://www.jmsw.net/jmswimages/4gb.JPG[/img]

Personally I very much doubt that doubling the RAM from 2GB to 4GB would have much of an effect on the performance of the NC20 when going from 1GB to 2GB didn’t make much difference in the first place. Given the expense of the 4GB module you could have bought one of the more expensive ultra-portable laptops from Toshiba if you want that much of a performance boost.Enjoy the NC20 for what it is, not what it isn’t.

I know it’s expensive (and useless), was just curiosity. 🙂May 22, 2009 at 5:35 am #192033drunkencactus

[/quote1242970453]Although a valid point, the original question was “can it be done”, not “should it be done”.
As it appears, it can be done?
Curious if anyone has tested it? Even though as you have stated above, the gain may not be worth the price.:p

My understanding is that it cannot be done because the chipset’s memory controller can only address a maximum of 2 GB in each of up to 2 slots. The motherboard has only one slot, so the maximum memory is 2 GB.[quote1242987864=Gav2k]
you cannot fit a 4gb strip of ram in the slot. the controller can only address 2gb per channel. the board in the samsung has one slot ie one channel to work with so the max is 2gb.
