Kho
MemberHi,
I just recently purchased a Samsung NC20 netbook and was wondering which RAM would be the best choice to upgrade to. I know the max is 2GB (1 stick) but that’s about it. I don’t know anything about the other specifications if someone could direct me in the right direction.
Thanks again.

MemberWelcome to the forum, Kho 🙂
I bought my RAM from Crucial Memory – good prices and great service 🙂
You may be interested in Jez’s guide to installing your 2GB RAM and laptop mag’s video guide.
And make sure you keep the Samsung supplied RAM – if you subsequently have a problem with your NC20, Samsung customer services will ask you to reinstall the original memory chip.
Hope that helps 🙂

That’s the chipset not the motherboard. The motherboard has only one RAM slot, i.e. it will allow a maximum RAM of 2 GB.If the motherboard had two RAM slots then you could take advantage of the chipset’s maximum RAM of 4GB 🙂

MemberMaybe a 4 GB ram module (1 x 4gb)…

Then you run into the chipset’s limitation of:Quote:Memory Controller* Supports up to two 64-bit DDR2 667 DIMMs (4 GB max)
i.e. up to 2 GB in each of two slots 😉

umm your wrong actuialy the chipset supports 4 gigs meaning the $200 4 gig so-dim moduiles
will workthe limmatashion comes from at the time only 2 gig sticks being around..
the number of slots isent the issue its what the shipset supports
becase when only 1 gig ddr was around and the manuial said 2 gigs 1 gig dimm x2
dident matter becase the 2 gig mduials worked with no issuesMay 20, 2009 at 11:08 pm #192021TCMuffin
MemberThe 4 GB DDR3 RAM chip is not backwardly compatible with a DDR2 motherboard such as that fitted in all the Sammy netbooks.
For example, DDR3 needs 1.5V power, DDR2 needs 1.8V, and DDR needs 2.5V power. Also, in terms of standard motherboard slots the notch, or the key, for different memory modules is at different place for the three type of memory thus preventing any accidental insertion in memory slots which can damage the memory and/or the motherboard.
So, the maximum RAM for any Sammy netbook currently available is 2 GB of DDR2 memory.

MemberSorry TCMuffin but I don’t understand your point. There are also 4 GB DDR2 RAM modules… just one example from Kingston: http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/PartsInfo.asp?root=us&LinkBack=http://www.kingston.com&ktcpartno=KTT667D2/4G

MemberPersonally I very much doubt that doubling the RAM from 2GB to 4GB would have much of an effect on the performance of the NC20 when going from 1GB to 2GB didn’t make much difference in the first place. Given the expense of the 4GB module you could have bought one of the more expensive ultra-portable laptops from Toshiba if you want that much of a performance boost.
Enjoy the NC20 for what it is, not what it isn’t.

Memberyou cannot fit a 4gb strip of ram in the slot. the controller can only address 2gb per channel. the board in the samsung has one slot ie one channel to work with so the max is 2gb.

Memberthe chipset supports 4gb but i read its 2x2GB ie 2gb max in one SO-DIMM
