Pot Black – that was my first sight of snooker, and I enjoyed it. Then Mr Higgins, the Hurricane, emerged as the alternative side to the seriousness of the sport, and became a hero of mine then. His unpredictability meant that one could never be sure that his amazing talent would ensure victory, but he was great to watch.
His off-table life may have been considered even more controversial, but to a snooker fan that is beside the point. Watching Alex play was guaranteed to provide more entertainment value than any other snooker player. He was always the showman, with the talent to back it up.
Like him or loathe him, he was a major character who influenced and helped the growth of snooker as a worldwide sport. I think that a lot of people involved owe him more than they might think.

Well said tontb, I hadn’t seen that news until I read your post although I knew he had been unfortunately suffering with throat cancer for a long while.
The BBC has a tribute page here that may be of interest to those that remember his great talent. I’ll not forget watching those exciting slam dunk long pots that he was so famous for. Also occasionally sporting a black eye at major tournaments as well 🙂
