MemberFound this website while searching the web for ways to improve performance. I must say I found some very good advice here!
So far I love the thing, but I do have a few complaints re: Full-screen video playback.
Most things seem to play alright as long as it is just standard divx or non-HD youtube. However, a few of my downloaded movies appear to be a bit grainy sometimes, and also if I try to move the mouse (trackpad) or adjust the volume while in fullscreen playback it will skip a little, and the sound will crackle for a second or two, then it goes back to normal.
First thing I did was get rid of hyperspace (windows 7 starter is fine for me) and all the bloatware like McCaffee and junk.
-Installed Avast free
-Installed VLC-Tried installing some of the other players/codecs mentioned here on other threads to see if it was any better, but it doesn’t seem to be. (I did use cccleaner to remove any redundant codecs/registry stuff and now am just using VLC w/ no outside codecs installed)
Overall I am mostly satisfied, but I was hoping for some feedback as far as if this symptom is normal or what. Also am wondering if I should take it back and try a different model/brand…do any others (under 500) have better video playback?
Also, I noticed some comments here about settingcpu power to max when on battery to improve video. I have tried this and it honestly seems no different.. Based on that I am wondering about if I should even bother, and how much it will effect the battery life.
Also, isn’t that what the FN/f8 key is for anyways? That way it automatically sets it back when you close VLC or w/e… *shrug*The reason I chose this Samsung is it was really the only one I could find in my price range that had the Matte screen, (a MUST) and it had mostly good reviews.
Most important things to me are Video and sound quality, battery life, and matte screen. All I use it for is youtube, watching movies, and browsing the web…
If anyone could help me out…should I return this thing and wait for the ION or is this the best I’m going to get with the Matte screen…? If so, please vote, and if you vote Yes (to take it back) please post which model you think would better suit me.
Thanks in advance for any help/guidance.

MemberHmmmm…
I have a N110 – I do *not* use it for viewing video (certainly not HD 720p stuff) and don’t play anything other than older games. If I wanted to do either of these things, I’d go for a laptop, not a netbook. I just tried streaming an HD video off YouTube – no way; playback is poor on 480 as well… Internet connection?
So saying… I have a 3.7GB AVI file, 720×304, 25fps stored on an external USB hard drive. It plays perfectly on the netbook screen using Windows Media Player, but is a bit jittery when played on my external monitor as part of my extended desktop.

MemberYeah, I certainly did not expect to play anything HD. I download standard 700 mb avi (divx) movies is all.
As I said, it seems okay for the most part other than a few glitches here and there. A few appear grainy sometimes (not all tho so maybe it’s just that particular file or maybe it was an h.264 and I didn’t realize it.Really just wondering if I bought the right netbook for this or if I should take it back and find a different one, or wait for these new ION powered ones. I DON’T care about being able to play HD or bluerays though since I don’t download those anyhow. Long as it plays standard divx movies the way it should I will be happy.

MemberWell, I’m happy with the way it plays my DivX, and it should be pretty much the same as your 120. Maybe your CODECS are suspect… I have K-Lite Mega CODEC Pack 5.6.1 installed…

MemberI guess if playing HD vid is a high priority then you might struggle. An ION powered netbook should give you a better time.
But as others have said, these machines can handle lower res video (which tbh looks fine on 10″ screen imo!!) and of course netbooks have some other handy uses too 🙂
I watch a lot of Beeb iPlayer and other Internet telly on mine and have to say I’m happy with the results.

MemberSorry to have to report that I bit the bullet and took it back.
I loved it aesthetically, but it just wasn’t getting the job done and frequently even standard def video was stuttering a bit (mostly if moving mouse or adjusting volume)
It got too annoying so I did some more research, and thanks to bestbuy was able to swap it out for an hp mini 311 1000nr w/ no restocking fees. The 311 comes with the ION LE but there is a hack to turn it into a full ION. Between that, using MPC-HC, and installing the beta flash 10.1.3 I I am now able to not only watch full 1080p downloaded movies, but fullscreen 1080p on youtube with no stuttering whatsoever!
I really wish this HP had the Sammy’s looks and aesthetics, but I had no choice since the main thing I was using this for was videos. The HP also has the HDMI out (nice bonus) and an 11.6 inch screen…all for only 20 dollars more than the 210 was.
Thanks again for the help I received on here, and good luck to you all w/ your Sammys!

MemberThis annoys me so much. I wish I’d taken my N220 back before it was too late. It’s so slow and clunky and has been like that straight out of the box. Most of the time it struggles with regular video despite having a sticker on it saying HD playback!
Well done for biting the bullet Suftop

MemberI think when it says HD playback it refers to the fact that it works with players which have Internal Software codecs turned OFF, otherwise it will simply defeat the purpose oh and also I think the HD playback refers to decoding strictly H.264 content “locally”, unless of course Adobe Flash can utilize the BCM-Crystal card which i doubt. So your N220 shouldn’t really struggle with HD content, because even my N210 can playback 720P content using the CPU only to decode (doesn’t even goto 100%), unless of course if you are decoding Mpeg2s, or Xvid in HD you shouldn’t get vid playback issues.
You mite also want to remove the rubbishware which comes on the netbook. If all else fails drop to XP, since win7 is known to be a resource hog.

MemberThanks blazer. I don’t understand what you mean though. Does WMP on Win7 have Internal Software codecs turned off? I have some 720p stuff in MKV files. Are they no good?
I’m plodding through getting rid of the rubbishware on here too. Skype doesn’t even run without problems at the moment.

Memberummm. WMP on Win 7 does use hardware acceleration (pretty sure it uses CUDA) but cannot guarantee that it can use the broadcom.
I would recommend you get something like gomplayer form http://www.gomlab.com then goto
preferences -> filter -> codecs and untick H.264, i’m sure Media PLayer Classic and a bunch of others have the ability to disable the internal codecs too i’m not familiar with those.May 7, 2010 at 3:32 am #211889SingingSam
MemberThanks again Blazer
I downloaded GOM Player and it’s playing my 720p MKV file perfectly. I couldn’t find the same options in VLCplayerNow I just need to get skype sorted and I’ll be loving my Samsung
