MemberHi Good afternoon, I am a new member of this site, my name is Matt.
The reason for my post is to ask for some opinions from you guys (and girls!) with a lot more experience of using the Samsung NC10.
I have read quite a lot of (Excellent) reviews on the Samsung NC10, but a few concerns keep cropping up here and there. One of these is the Wifi connection speed, whilst using the internet. A few post comment on how slow Internet explorer/ Firefox are whilst using the NC10.
One of the main reasons for the upcoming purchase, is internet use. Has anyone had any issues with sluggish internet / connection speeds, or is this just a software/driver issue?
Can these issues be overcome with correct settings / correct wireless drivers?
The NC10 in question has 2gb ram, Windows Xp Pro installed, will the extra ram help speed things up?
I would greatly appreciate yours views and experience with this model, I am buying in a couple of days and I would like to think I have made the right decision.
Thank you
Matt.

MemberWelcome to the forum, Matt 🙂
If I was in the market for a netbook at the moment, I would be looking to buy a N140 after 22 October when W7 is released, or as soon as Samsung announces the N140 with W7 preinstalled.
As much as I love my NC10, the better battery life, draft n wifi adapter, better speakers, etc would make me wait – but then I already have a NC10 ;).

If it is second hand, and assuming for a good price, then definitely YES, go for it.
The extra RAM won’t do a lot, but may be useful if you have a lot of programs running at once.
The wi-fi issues, should you actually have any, may be helped by changing the wi-fi card if you need to. Not an expensive or too difficult a job.
Find an NC10 at the right price and you can’t really go too far wrong.

MemberHey, well my NC10 has been a great success and it is still going strong (which means my Mrs won’t let me buy a new one for years – grrrr!).
If I was buying one new then I’d go for the N140 tbh, but an NC10 for a good price is a real consideration. The difference between the current range just isn’t that great so price is a real key factor imo.

MemberI have been offered the NC10 with Xp Pro, Microsoft office 2008, 2gb upgrade + external dvd writer for…£200.
It is 8 weeks old, and is fully boxed with receipts.
Is that a good deal?
Thank you.

The NC10 is built for the internet and is an excellent machine.
When reading forums there is always good and bed news. The good news is it’s a great place for finding out information and resolving problems/issues. The bad news is it is frequented largely by people that have/are experiencing problems or wish to discuss problems. This can lead to the false apprehension that there are lots of problems with a particular model and in truth what is missed is the fact that there may me many thousands of happy and contented users out there with no problems at all, hence the issue can become clouded. It’s a bit like the old addage bad news travels faster than good news 🙂Yes there are a few members here that have experienced connectivity problems, but AFAIK from what I have read here, these issues have all been resolved by driver replacement, settings amendments etc. or by cheaply replacing the wireless card in some instances.
Regarding Firefox I have always found it to be good and fast, though it’s startup time is longer that Chrome or Safari. I prefer it as it is customisable to my liking and has may good addons.
Quote:The NC10 in question has 2gb ram, Windows Xp Pro installed, will the extra ram help speed things up?If you have lots of memory intensive programs and or browser windows open it will improve the experience and it’s relatively cheap so worth the upgrade. If you move to Windows 7 it will be needed.
Quote:I would greatly appreciate yours views and experience with this model, I am buying in a couple of days and I would like to think I have made the right decision.I agree with Jayne, the N140 is now a better/improved model and a little more expensive than the NC10. I’m biased as we have 2 x NC10’s and they are great machines, but his week I ordered an N140 for my daughter rather than recommending another NC10, but the choice is yours 🙂

That sounds like a fair price. Has it got the 6 cell battery?
Are you sure that is XP Pro or the XP home it ships with?Make sure all the discs are included with it
Note AFAIK the warranty is not transferable.

MemberI bought an nc10 over a week ago , and to be honest its ok , just ok , the hard drive is massive for a netbbook and the screen is nice and big , I have had issues with the screen turning grey and freezing and the unit switching off for no apparent reason , might just be mine ,but if I had the money all over again I would buy an acer aspire , or an asus 1000 , both cheaper and from experience with the acer aspire one , I can say more reliable , Im hoping this forum will point in me in the right direction to get this nc10 running the software I used to use on my old asus 701 , so far I have had not much luck running the games I used to play and the music software that used to run on my 600 mhz 512 gb ram 7 inch screen asus 701.

MemberStrangely, I thought to myself £200 would be the kinda price I’d want to pay. Any more than that and I’d be looking at buying new. Perhaps not an awesome deal, but certainly a fair one imho.
PS. NC10s rock ;)!

MemberI have no other netbook/laptop experience to compare it with but I am very happy with my NC10 and the deal sounds fair to me too, especially if it includes the external DVD drive. I guess it depends who you are buying from, do you know them? How far away are they?

MemberThank you for all the replies so far! It has really helped in my decision.
I have been to look at the NC10’s in Currys (Just to check them out) the keyboard layout seems fine, and I asked for a demo, connecting to the web and it was fine, BBc Iplayer streamed ok.
Again, cheers for all the comments!Matt.

MemberI just bought a Samsung NC10 3 days ago and I have no reservations in highly recommending it. I choose it over a Samsung N120 and HP 1030NR/CA. The NC10 plays all my videos (AVI) and music (MP3) files very well. I’ve had no connection issues: WiFi or Bluetooth. WiFi connects consistently at 54Mbps. I use Bluetooth to connect and sync to my Palm TX with no issues; also successfully tested with my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I’ve had no issues with the touchpad and find it very easy to use. The screen and keyboard are excellent. For battery life I’m getting between 5-6 hours. I’ve read the specs for the N140 and I would still buy the NC10 (I got mine for c$350).

MemberWell, I finally did it! I bought a Sammy NC10 today, got it new in the end, up to now, all seems ok. The only problem I seem to be having is with UPDATE PLUS. it is showing the updates avaialable, but not letting me install. It is freezing on the download bar. any ideas?
thanks, Matt.
