MemberHi folks,
haven’t been on here for a while, but thought i’d just post up about my latest gadget just ordered today.
We already have my Sammy NC10, my wife’s Acer Aspire One 8GB (Linpus Linux) and I have an older Acer Aspire laptop.
Well our old self-built desktop has been creaking lately, and it finally gave up the ghost on sunday – BSOD!
Repeated ttempts to reinstall XP failed so I decided to go wih Ubuntu. Whilst this got it back and running, i has frozen on me 5 times yesterday, also I cannot get my daughter’s favourite wbsite to run (http://www.buildabearville.com) it loads but login fails repeatedly – works on my XP Sammy.
SO the gadget freak inside me saw an opportunity and I have just ordered an Acer Veriton N260G Nettop from ebuyer, it should arrive tomorrow.
I sounds kinda funky, fits on the VESA mount on the back of the monitor, 1GB ram, 160GB HDD (sounding familier? :D) Atom N280 processor, so pretty much a netbook on the desk!
It should be more than fine for what we need, as said, we have our netbooks so it’s only for the wee one to play with.
Anyone heard much about these? I think they are pretty new to the scene.
Will update when i’ve had a chance to play.
Cheers,

MemberCool. Let us know how you get on with the netop 🙂

MemberI’ve always liked the look of these nettops, obviously saw the eeebox first. I have never bought one though. Never found a need for a low spec desktop pc.
Let us know how you get on with it as I’m always interested to see what kind of market there is for this kind of product.
I just ordered parts for my new build and the thought of running a 1.6ghz ATOM as a desktop makes me shudder.August 12, 2009 at 8:04 am #198156tonytb
MemberI use my NC10 as my desktop/only computer, I only ever do light tasks at home. I imagine that using similar spec with a full keyboard and large screen would be fine for a good percentage of home users.

MemberJust set everything up tonight – it is really tiny and is safely attached to the rear of my 19″ Sammy monitor 😀
Absolutely silent in operation, installed AVG, OpenOffice, VLC, etc.
It runs buildabearville and clubpenguin fine so that’s my daughter happy – it will be predominantly a web machine, with possibly some office stuff as my wife doesn’t like typing on her Aspire One – too small keyboard!
I have used my Sammy for video editing, torrents, watching films, all manner of stuff and haven’t found it struggles for anything yet so I don’t suppose this new Acer nettop will either.##If we want games, we have an XBox 360, Wii and DSi so no need to use the PC!

MemberI think this would be ideal for office personnel who only ever do mainly admin stuff like word/excel and web/email – as i said, absolutely no noise whatsoever from it, low power consumption and takes up practically no desk space.
Comes with a nice Acer infrared mouse and decent keyboard.
So far, 10/10 for what we want it for!

MemberExcellent! Cool feedback 71notout. Atom power and 1 or 2Gb RAM would suffice for a lot of people who are ‘sold’ high spec PCs. Not to say that there isn’t a legitimate market for high end PCs but they are not always necessary.

Memberhi tonytb, you said: “I use my NC10 as my desktop/only computer”
I do quite the same.
The others PCs are now less usefulls.Do you keep your battery inside the nc 10 when you use it for a long time on AC voltage?
August 13, 2009 at 8:30 pm #198158tonytb
MemberHi guantas, yup I leave the battery in all the time. I know that these batteries last for a finite number of charges, and that charging at the ‘wrong’ time may shorten its useful life. TBH I could not be bothered to watch the state of charge and worry whether I should have the battery in or out, or charging or discharging, or wrapped in plastic in the fridge at any given time. All that makes my convenient little machine become inconvenient. If I wreck the battery in a couple of years I will either buy a new one or maybe it will be time to replace my NC10.
Besides, the back two rubber feet are on the battery

MemberOk! I am in the same way of mind.
I keep it inside. -
