MemberHi everyone,
Had my NC10 for some time now but just recently discovered this great forum!
Have just now read and used Freddys great “how to tweak your nc10…”
Read and ordered parts for theRings great mod using the intel 5300n
Ordered new speakers etc.and i just love everything!
Next project includes putting some 3G in it. However, since i’m a bit late in discovering all the hidden potential most links are dead. Does anyone know where to find a good 3G card now? Can i use pretty much anyone or does it have to be specific one for the samsung nc-10. Could i use a dell mini pci-e card such as this? Or perhaps this?
Or, do you guys have a better idea?
Appreciate all help!
Cheers
/JoEdit: Changed the Subject. I have also found a 3G card, would this card work? A Sierra Networks MC8780 with GPS :-)!!
Any input appreciated.
Cheers

MemberQuick update.
Got the wi-fi in no problem. Need to get new wires and connector for the speakers. However opening my sammy up i noticed that i don’t have the space for the simcard on my mother board. Does anyone know if it’s possible and in that case how i would solder wires from the mini pci-e connector straight to the sim-card holder?
Any info appreciated!
Cheers

Participantjo.b – Welcome to the forum
Yes, you can wire directly from the pci-e connector to the sim carrier. Have a look at the links I posted in this thread.
Hope this helps

MemberThanks for the link Jeepers, found a lot of stuff there. However, i can’t really seem to understand all the information.
If i look at the first picture here, i get the pinout. (also, what’s the information on the second (top left) pinout about) Guess i should solder on the same pins but on the other side (haven’t got the connector yet so i’m just guessing). But to me it seems like that is different information than i get in this link.
Could anyone help me so that i understand?
Also, what pin (goes hand in hand with former Q i guess) goes to what pin on the SIM-component in this picture (scroll down to the picture captioned “SIM components pinout:”
I’m sorry for all the questions that might be self-explanatory to you guys and that i’m asking them without having contributed to the site before. If i’m successful i’ll post some pics.
That said, i’d really appreciate some help with this one!
Cheers

]picture is showing the motherboard connection pads for the 20 pin SMD MNT4 (J501) connector which is not fitted on the standard NC10. On the 3G enabled NC10’s the connector is fitted and mates with a corresponding connector mounted on a sub pcb board. The sub board, which contains the sim holder, is then fixed on the two stand off screw posts at either side.(M500 and M501). This allows for the sim holder to line up with the slot in the back of the case. The J501 connections are routed via the motherboard to the slot 2 pci-e connector pins.
In the picture the person has soldered to these pads small wires to the sim card holder. As these pads are very very tiny it may be easier to take the sim wires to the pci-e connector pins.

You could trace from the pci-e pins to the J501 pads to identify the corresponding pads but the soldering to the pads may prove too challenging.

MemberHi Jo.b
I have just fitted a Sierra Wireless MC8780 off ebay, had to flash the firmware to enable GPS (main reason for buying) I can get 7 or 8 Sats in the car, very happy.
The signal strength is quite low but I have only a home made dipole built into my N140 lid (next to camera)
I have ordered some small antennas & will experiment with over the next few days. The 3G all seems to work well too – just ask if you need any help with firmware etc.

MemberHi ya.
I’ve been away for a while (however, passed Leeds on my way so picked up connectors from Farnells Trade Counter :-D.) so i havent done anything about this for a while. I hope i’ll have some time in the near future. I’ll post pics and story when i’m done. Thanks for all the help/offer of help. This forum is great. When i change my nc10 for something else in the future it’s going to be a samsung aswell. both because i’m really happy with my nc10 but also because of this forum – i think it’s brilliant!!
Cheers

Participantjo.b – Thanks for the kind words 🙂
Good luck with your soldering and let us know how you get on, pictures would indeed be nice to see.

MemberWhat are the speakers that you’ve bought for the NC10? Are they internal replacments?
February 19, 2010 at 9:00 am #210050jo.b
MemberHi Stubs.
I bought two speakers 25KC08-n from a swedish company called ELFA (you might need to change the country settings)
But start with checking out this thread.
Cheers

MemberThere are also some speaker notes on our wiki here:
[Wiki]How To:Replace Speakers on the Samsung NC10[/Wiki]
Feel free to update, if you joined sammynetbook before Jan 2010 then your username is present on the wiki and you can request a password reset to get access, if not then I’m afriad you need to register here. I will try to get it auto syncronised one day!

MemberCool thanks for that!
Would you say it’s a worthwhile upgrade? Does it make a noticable difference?March 28, 2010 at 10:48 am #210051jo.b
MemberHey Stubs,
Sorry for the unbeliviable late answer, i must have missed your post. Yes, i think that it was a worthwhile upgrade. More volume in sound performance. The speakers are however nothing an audiophile would recommend but then again, maybe they wouldnt be playing any music at all over these speakers, changed or not.

MemberTraveling has put this mod on the hold for quite a while. I’ve been doing bits and pieces to it every now and then over the two weekends i’ve been at home.
My travels took me by Leeds and the farnell trade counter however so that was nice. When i got back home i took the time and fitted the connector. It wasn’t really that hard that i thought it would be, just a process of pushing down the tip of the soldering iron on the right connector making it fasten to the presoldered pad. I’m definitely no soldering pro. If you are careful, anyone can probably do this.

Soldered connectorJust make sure you don’t go between the pins with the tip cause that will probably get you a two pin bob (the black wire is one of the antennas for the wireless card)

The other sideWhen that was done, I started to look at pages to see how i should solder the wires for the sim card holder. I got alot of help from this forum and i thought this was helpful together with Strombom’s pic of the sim components pin out.
I then went on to slash an old HDD cable to use as wiring.

Old cableSince i was home for only a short period of time i decided to do a “trial installation” first and just to see if it would work so instead of solder i just stuck the cables in the connector,

Wiring. (One to many wires here as you can see, took it off before putting everything back together)and with a glue gun, put a bit of glue on the wire.

Glued wireAfter that i just soldered the wires to the sim card holder and routed the wire through the insides so that the sim card holder eventually will be where there’s space for it. (right now it’s not attached to anything but i’ll sort that out later)

Sim card holder, placed where it should be (and later on, minus the wire sticking out)As of now, it’s not working properly yet. However, i think it’s more of an software problem although i’ll measure and check the wires when i’ll get a chance to it next time i’m close to some tools :).
I also need to get some proper antennas for the GSP and the 3G.(Enox, do you have the firmware to flash the card and get the GPS working?)
Cheers
