MemberI was under the impression that they keys had the silver nano on, actually to protect us from harmful germs.
I know that there is little chance of swaying a hypochondriac, but there are a million substances which we come into contact with daily that in large enough quantities might be considered toxic.
The point I am making is that the NC10 has been around for over a year, and if anyone can point to a single incident where anyone has come to harm from touching the keys then I will…. aaaarghh, I’m going 😛
But seriously, if these keyboards were in any way dangerous then I am positive that Americans, at least, would be protesting to government about it. I’m pretty sure that they are not.

ParticipantI thought that the keyboard sub layer, ie. the printed circuit board, not the keys themselves, is coated in the silver nano particles.
I remember that there used to be a picture and description on the Samsung website a long while ago but I cannot find it any more 😛

MemberThe use of silver will certainly make a keyboard safer to use really. Walking outside will do you more damage from breathing in pollution than making minimal contact with silver on an atomic level. Touching a silver spoon would be more ‘dangerous’.
You may have heard reports of danger with nanoparticles, but those are certainly not silver nanoparticles. If it’s that much of a concern, then you may want to avoid hospitals, because they coat their catheters in silver these days to reduce infection.

“According to Samsung, the Samsung Silver Nano Health System application on their new 10 inch netbook, the NC10, kills 99% of all the bacteria typists can manage to smear on there. “Sense the safety of silver: it’s here, it’s clear, and it’s silver,†rejoices the company’s nano silver website. “Keep a pure silver happiness,†“breathe a fresh silver rejoicing,†“your body and your child want a purified life.†Someone over in Samsung’s PR department had a field day writing copy.”
It mentions typists smearing on there, they wouldn’t smear the circuit board, only the keys themselves.

[/quote1265507161]That extract sounds like a third party interpretation to me. The give away was “According to Samsung”The Samsung picture I referred to in my earlier post showed a cut away view of the keyboard substrate which indicated that the area treated was the substrate.
Strange that it seems to have been removed from the website 😛

MemberMakes no sense to me, that would be like saying I could keep my house clean by vacuuming under the floorboards.

[/quote1265508496]I think the point they are probably trying to make is what falls down between the keys and lays festering is combated by the silver nano. This probably explains why all mention of it has been removed from the website 😛

It’s not news that Samsung have been found out for dodgy dealings, as you just need to look at all the anti-trust cases and price fixing issues that have plagued Samsung for years and are still continuing.
I have to say, as good as Samsung products are and as much as the company releases great products, the company are notorious for breaking the law left right and center. The funny thing is, it’s clear they’re not the only ones doing it, but they’re certainly the ones getting caught the most from what I’ve read. 😛

MemberAh – so does this mean that the top layer of the keyboard does NOT have the particles on them? Correspondingly, fingers would not come into contact with them directly? If it is the substrate, what is the problem???

Ah – so does this mean that the top layer of the keyboard does NOT have the particles on them? Not necessarily, details of how the technology is applied has been removed from the website. What we do know is that Dell have been granted a licence, however because Samsung had failed to register its products with EPA as a pesticide it has not. This in turn explains why Samsung has removed all information, including the original advertising data, from the websites.
Dell have partnered with Agion Technologies, a leader in silver-based antimicrobial solutions, and it may be worth investigating how they apply the coating to their keyboards since the Samsung system is likely to be similar.
From a technical standpoint is likely that the nano silver coating is applied to the keys as well as the substrate but without definitive information it is difficult to establish this with certainty.
Samsung are using the silver nano technology in washing machines, refrigerators air purifiers and air conditioners, so it’s not limited to keyboard use.
source1 source2tonytb – you might be interested to know they are also using it in vacuum cleaners as well.
Might be useful if you decide to hoover under the floorboards 😀February 7, 2010 at 5:40 pm #209728blue_eyes777

Thanks jeepers.
There are a few silver nano keyboard covers for sale I see now. These lay directly on top of the keys, specifically designed so that the only thing you touch is a silver nano laden surface. And as you say, the technology is being put to use in many other appliances.
