MemberWell following my recent post about my battery losing charge, it died on Friday night:(
I noticed that the darn thing would not charge, instead of a charging red light I got a flashing red/green light.
I went to PC World who tested 2 other September made NC10s and both of their batteries were DOA..
They were great and gave me a new NC10, which happems to be an August 2009 model – it is currently working fine.
Staff in the shop gave me some interesting information..
1) August 2009 machines come with quiet Western Digital hard drives and reliable Korean batteries (apparently the old NC10s have Korean batteries). The side of the box is printed in black.
2) September 2009 machines come with noisy Fujitsu hard drives and Japanese batteries. The side of the box is printed in purple (like the new N110).
I wonder whether Samsung has started to use cheaper materials to make their discounted machines?

ParticipantAs far as the hard drives concerned the NC10 has traditionally come with one of a range of drives from various manufacturers (Fujitsu, Western Digital, Samsung, Htachi etc…), I’m not sure if they’ve standardised on a particular drive in the NC10. Though it would be interesting if they have.
My November 2008 NC10 came with a Fujitsu hard drive and a Korean battery.

ParticipantStrider – Interesting post, maybe the beginnings of a Samsung bad batch re-call? however it’s good news that PCWorld gave a replacement machine.
How long did you have the old NC10? as I get the feeling it was older than 30 days. That being so I’m surprised they replaced it rather than referring you to Samsung support for repair. This sounds like very good customer service from PCWorld. When I recently bought Win 7 from them they refunded me when they reduced the price some days after I purchased. – impressed me and I took time to write to them and thank them 🙂
So the motto is, look out for the boxes with purple writing.
Thanks for the heads up as I was contemplating buying my grandson one from Dixons for Christmas:)

MemberHi Jeepers
I bought an N110 a few weeks back which had a hard drive fault. Whilst I was in the shop I saw the reduced NC10 so decided to get a refund and then buy that (for £239) – saved £90:))
Unfortunately the rest is history… Got a battery fault on that NC10 so ended with yet another new machine.
Obviously I have bad luck with electronic goods:)

MemberHi all, i am new to this site and have been lurking on here for the last week or two. What a great site! So useful – well done guys a girls! 😀
This particular thread i found interesting as i purchased my nc10 from currys a week ago or so and i think i have one of the september builds (as it suggests on the sticker on the bottom of the netbook!)
I use BatteryBar v3.1 to monitor the battery status more accurately and initally once instaled on my nc10 for the first time it said straight off that battery wear was at 1.9%. I don’t know how accurate this software is as it is the first time i have used it but now its had increased to 7.7% over the last few days.
I have only charged and fully discharged the battery about 3 times now and can’t believe it already has wear. I’m going to keep a close eye on it and see how it goes. If it gets worse i will report back!

MemberDoes your battery say it was made in Japan?? That was where my dud was made.
Try BattStat, it is quite a good battery utility and has a battery wear guide. May be helpful in trying to establish whether BatteryBar is accurate.

MemberThanks for the reply Strider. I downloaded battstat as you mentioned – http://users.rcn.com/tmtalpey/BattStat/
Installed it and it still says 7% wear. I will see how it goes hopefully it will settle at 7%. Not sure where it was made, i will check when i get off here 🙂 -
