MemberHi, I’ve just bought an N145 Plus JP03 and only just started looking at it.
I’m used to big systems for graphics, so this is a major departure for me (understatement of the century). Obviously I have to get used to it.
I will have questions as the machine will have the sole purpose of: updating a blog, grabbing my webmail and minor image editing in prep for blog posts. That’s all it will be used for. So a lot of the functions, programs etc., will have to go.
I guess all the software that Samsung installed, for the most part, is not needed. I don’t play games, won’t be watching video, not listening to music etc-etc. I want to strip this down to bare minimum (but still be able to run an old version of Photoshop LE). I don’t really want to buy a heavier version of W7 and I like Windows.
Suggestions welcome 🙂
The one thing I have noticed, is that people complain about not being able to get change the Windows 7 Starter background image on the screen.
Oh yes you can, that’s the first thing I did.
I don’t like images behind my work and just have a plain color screen. It’s very easy, just change the theme to Windows Classic and have a plain color background (whichever color you want). Took me a few minutes (once I found where – and have subsequently forgotten ).October 2, 2011 at 12:38 pm #220487moktir
MemberI find this kind of thing is quite subjective, personally I also like having my Netbook quite stripped down, so I run XP on with a lot of unessential Windows programs and services uninstalled or disabled. I only have the important drivers installed (i.e. graphics, sound card, wireless) and I think the only Realtek Wireless Manager is the only program I installed from the list on the Samsung website.
But seeing as you’ll mostly just be using it for a blog I can’t imagine having other things that you’re not going to use will affect much. I would recommend upgrading to 2GB of RAM though as I did notice a performance difference when having multiple tabs open on my web browser then. Might also make a difference for Photoshop.
Take a look at Freddy’s guide for tweaking his NC10, again this is XP and I wouldn’t follow every suggestion on it but it will give an idea of things you could do:

MemberHi, thanks for your reply.

Me too.
The N145 is W7Starter. I’d rather have XP Pro, but chances are SS will make it near impossible to find drivers on their site (not a very user friendly site that).I did try posting a more detailed thing in the W7 part of the forum, but it didn’t take for some reason. I spend several hours yesterday doing a Goog and have gotten rid of a quite a bit of stuff. The games package to start with, tho’ the Windows games I can’t (I suppose Freecell could keep me occupied during a lull).
Anything to do with printers, file sharing, Samsung Update Plus, Bing bar, SISShortcut, have been dumped.
Samsung’s help file is a massive Flash thing that actually crashes the system. Wish they’d use PDF files. So a lot of stuff I’m in the dark about.
Some of the Samsung stuff is handy, so I’ve kept them.
Easy Display Manager, Easy Network Manager, Easy Resolution Manager, Easy Speedup Manager, Easy Battery ManagerThe big thing is Norton Online Backup and that refuses to do. I don’t know how I get rid of that.
The rest of Norton is gone and Avast installed. Windows Firewall is okay so I don’t have to worry about an alternative. There is a thing named Movie Color Enhancer, which I do not know if it handles color generally or what.
Going the Classic theme has given me a good 40+ pixels more room. I use the old Photoshop 5LE, as it is small, fast and tests have seen it run fine with the 1mb RAM (so I probably won’t add more RAM). For the first time, in 20 years, I have the Taskbar at the bottom (feels strange it does…) as it looks like W7 doesn’t like it at the top – stuff seems to disappear under it.
The only thing I’ll be using the netbook for is (thru my own cloud): webmail, blog posts, text files for copy (though on occasion I may use Notepad). PS5LE is just to edit my occasional image (serious stuff is done on my design machine).
Online coding I do, but Windows I do not (usually just hired someone for that). As I’m retired now, things are a bit different 🙂
I still have these to figure out/do:
Flash – I hate this, far too dangerous
Acrobat Reader – may keep if Samsung do PDF files for the help (I’m going make an official complaint about the Flash thing)
SRS Premium Sound Control Panel – if this is just to have great sound for music then it can go.
SamsungMovie – Is this an actual movie or something like Windows Media Player?
Microsoft Silverlight – Cant get rid of this, keeps coming back (it’s a Flash alternative)
Windows Live Essential 2011 (no idea what this is yet)The machine ran a Windows update that crashed at IE9. I stopped it and 9 wasn’t installed (thankfully – there seem be all kinds of complaints out there about this). Then I found where I could turn auto updates off and did. This is all quite a lot different than XP Pro. Especially where function names have been changed – but they are still the same thing.
Still haven’t figure out how to do a backup.
